Historia
Some people keep an eye on the sky early and often, every day, with eyes of fascination, a mind of curiosity, and a deep desire to learn about the wonders of the Earth's atmosphere. People like James Spann. Most know him from social media, television, radio, or the weekly show for weather nerds, WeatherBrains. This autobiography allows folks to ride along with James Spann on his long and winding life journey. The book was written to document a long career in weather and the events that shaped it, and to serve as an encouragement and blessing to those who read/listen to it.

Enjoyable and Honest!
Revisado: 02-26-25
I will never forget the 2011 Super Tuesday tornado outbreak. The Weather Channel was locked on our TV and they would cut in with bits and pieces from James Spann, the first time I had heard of him. As a person who enjoys weather (the good and the bad) and takes tornado spotting seriously it was very cool to hear James' point of view and learn what he's experienced and how he feels about certain topics. The honesty and being able to admit he was wrong at certain points in his career and using those to learn and turn them into positives is very respectable and we can all learn something from that. Also like that he did the audible cut himself. Highly recommend this book!

Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

J.D. is one of the Good Guys
Revisado: 08-30-24
I knew in the first few paragraphs this was going to be a good one. I grew up in hollers, on front porches, down at the creek and in a very similar (but not exact) place to J.D. I have friends that are city slickers and friends that are "Hill People" as stated in this memoir and a term I grew up with. Like J.D. I, too, was mostly raised by my grandparents. The journey of Senator Vance is one to be celebrated and something I look up to. The biggest takeaways for me: everyone struggles and we should always see the light in the darkness, even if it is dim. Someone always has it worse than you do and we should help those in need when we see them struggling. J.D. reading this himself really added even more to the enthusiasm and heartbreak to get his point across. I think all authors should do their own voiceovers to convey exactly what they mean and use the proper dialogue. I've read southern-based books (this one takes place mainly in Kentucky and Ohio) where I knew the "native" way of pronouncing a certain word and listening to someone else read that book incorrectly was like nails on a chalkboard. If you want to further learn about poverty, family addictions and struggles in this country and how one man navigated it all to come out ahead, this is your book. Whether you're from a coal mine in Kentucky or a high rise apartment in LA or NYC, if you keep an open mind you will enjoy this book and respect the struggles overcame. This will be a hardcover I purchase for all future high school grads I buy a graduation present for. A must read, especially for young adults venturing into the world. Keep in mind, there is coarse language but it is authentic and nothing worse than you hear out in public these days. If that is a deal breaker for you, this may not be your cup of tea, otherwise 10/10.

Historia
In a field of PhDs, Tim Samaras didn’t attend a day of college in his life. He chased storms with brilliant tools of his own invention and pushed closer to the tornado than anyone else ever dared. When he achieved what meteorologists had deemed impossible, it was as if he had snatched the fire of the gods. Yet even as he transformed the field, Samaras kept on pushing.

...about Tim Samaras, his son Paul Samaras and their beloved friend Carl Young. Tim was an outside the box thinker, hard headed and very determined to do things his way. I think anyone who's passionate about anything can relate to this and respect it. If you enjoy weather or just enjoy learning about forward-thinking human beings and how they impacted science-this one is for you. Thoroughly enjoyed and will be adding the hard copy to my library for generations beyond me to read.

I really enjoyed this book. During some of it I listened while walking through the woods and it really added a dimension. The author does an excellent job laying out the situation from Chris' adolescent years on. It is very inspiring and really helped me find something inside myself. Whether you're an outdoor enthusiast or just love adventure, this book has something for everyone.

A revisit many years later
Revisado: 12-25-23
I first read this book in 5th grade. This book, along with 3-4 others, is the reason why I love the outdoors and especially the suffering of a bitter cold winter day with the wind and snow whipping. A winter day in January in the plains or the Midwest is nothing compared to those who took on the task of surviving winter in the North. I really enjoy the way Will Hobbs ties reality and factual accounts into a fictional story and hints at real figures from this time frame and events during the Klondike Gold Rush. The narrator was very good at expressing tones and feeling and relayed the story well. If you like adventure and the outdoors, survival stories or any historical accounts of the Klondike I highly recommend this book.

Historia
The untold story of Leon Crane, the only surviving crew member of a World War II B-24 crash on a remote mountain near the Arctic Circle, who managed to stay alive 81 days in sub-zero temperature by making peace with nature, and end his ordeal by walking along a river to safety. Part World War II story, part Alaskan adventure story, part survival story, and even part inspirational story, this is what we call " a good listen".

The best military book I’ve ever listened to
Revisado: 11-17-23
This book has a little bit for everyone. Military references, history, era references to the 1940’s, wilderness and of course, survival and life in Alaska. The author did a fantastic job of painting the entire picture of time and place and the events leading up, during and after Leon Crane’s amazing trek. I feel as if I watched a movie after listening to it beginning to end. I typically don’t listen/read books more than once but this one I absolutely will!

Historia
He was a hard-working small business owner, an Army veteran, an attentive lover, and a doting father. But he was also something more, something sinister. A master of deception, he was a rapist, arsonist, and bank robber, and a new breed of serial killer, one who studied other killers to perfect his craft. He methodically buried kill-kits containing his tools of murder years before returning to reclaim them.

Not a bad book but always check the sample first
Revisado: 10-27-23
Some people are complaining about the narration but if you don’t get a sample and listen first it’s kinda on the listener. I think it fit well because it sometimes stumbles where it’s more like taking and less like reading. And it’s a little sloppy which makes it realistic and easier to listen to. If it was read perfectly it would be less effective and less interesting. Overall I enjoyed the details and the light this book shines on the victims and mental health issues serial killers have before they ever begin acting out.

Tales from the Indiana Hoosier Locker Room covers over a century of Indiana University basketball. Current and former Hoosiers talk of the excitement, the disappointment, and the celebration that has turned IU basketball into a statewide religion. The history of the Indiana program is revealed through the memories of the school’s hundreds of lettermen. Without a doubt, this is a must-listen for every March Madness and college basketball fan.

Revisado: 12-11-22
Awesome book accounting little bits and pieces from many important teams in the history of the Indiana University Basketball Program. I have been a fan of the Hoosiers my entire life and my family has been watching the Hoosiers since they came on TV in the early 1950’s. I’ve heard many, many stories in my 27 years on this earth and there were plenty of things I learned and didn’t know in this book. Excellent listen!

Historia
As of 2015, it is believed that there are at least 200 serial killers active in the United States at any given time - 33 of them were from Indiana. Nobody in their own home town would have wanted to imagine a fledgling serial killer lurking about, searching for his next victim. Or imagine one being their next door neighbor or the relative of a friend or even attending the local college. Yet, since the early 1970s, Vincennes, Indiana, Knox County, and Indiana in general has had it's share of cold blooded murder.
