One of my favorite(s)
Revisado: 04-05-25
I’m working my way through all of Agatha Christie’s novels this year and had forgotten how wonderful they truly are. I think this one is my favorites, despite the face that there are 10 chapters before Poirot shows up. The story is, as with all of Christie’s books, well written, with multi-faceted characters. While the crime is of course front and center, it is Poirot’s relationships with the other characters that I like so much. The narrative also has all the elements of the classic mystery novel of the early 20th century: murder, robbery, wealth, love affairs, greed, the French Riviera, and train travel. One cannot help but be swept up in it all. If you can only read a few of the Poirot books, this is one you must read.

Too abridged
Revisado: 02-05-25
This left out so much of Hemingway’s brilliant prose. While most major plot points were included, without the background, it was disjointed and made little sense.

Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Too abridged
Revisado: 01-06-25
I love the story (I’ve read it before!) and think the cast did an excellent job. I think they abridged too much of the story, though. While I like the radio drama style, I think it would have worked better with a bit of narration. Sometimes it was difficult to figure out what the characters were doing.

Historia
Last year, Rachel Bacharach met the man of her dreams at a Hanukkah party — and then her outgoing best friend Tamara swooped in and “called” Oz Caplan for herself. It’s a typical outcome for the dependable, bookish Rachel, who is never able to extinguish the spark she immediately felt for Oz. But being secretly in love with her best friend’s boyfriend all year hasn’t been easy.

Terrible premise
Revisado: 11-18-24
The writing and performance are well done, though Oz’s narrator was a bit dull, but the premise was awful. What “best friend” dates the guy her friend is clearly in love with for a year, knowing her friend’s feelings? That was stupid.

Historia
Harriet and Wyn have been the perfect couple since they met in college—they go together like salt and pepper, honey and tea, lobster and rolls. Except, now—for reasons they’re still not discussing—they don’t. They broke up five months ago. And still haven’t told their best friends.

Boring and whiny
Revisado: 10-03-24
This is my least favorite of the author’s books. The characters were unlikable, unrealistic, boring, and whiny. The sad thing is, they almost all had interesting stories I wanted to know, but instead, I got hours of boo-hoo, poor me complaining. Ugh. I disliked almost all of the characters because they just moaned about how difficult everything was and blathered in and on about their unhappiness while trying to pretend they were happy. I get a lot of that in real life, I don’t want it in my books.
While this could have been a good character study, as most of them had a backstory I would have loved to explore, but the focus of the book was just dull. I wanted to slap them, Cher style, and tell them to snap out of it.
All that said, the narrator is fantastic, as usual. This is not one I will listen to again, though.

No, no, no!
Revisado: 03-30-20
While the writing wasn’t stellar in the first 2 books, I did enjoy them as a fluffy break from all the COVID-19 gloom and doom. This book, though, nope! It had such potential, but Harrison screwed it up big time. I’m deeply disappointed.

Historia
Colonel Joe Bishop made a promise and he's going to keep it; taking the captured alien starship Flying Dutchman back out. He doesn't agree when the UN decides to send almost 70 elite Special Operations troops, hotshot pilots, and scientists with him; the mission is a fool's errand he doesn't expect to ever return from. At least, this time, the Earth is safe, right? Not so much.

Skippy is my spirit beer can
Revisado: 08-28-18
We started listening to this series on a long road trip and it was entertaining. Once the trip was over, I continued on with book 2.
While I think a lot of the book is overly wordy, I absolutely adore Skippy. His interactions with Joe are funny and sometimes even sweet (though the poignant moments are always tempered with sarcasm). Skippy’s comment about dazzling Joe with his PowerPoint presentation actually made me laugh out loud. My husband is career military and the military runs on PowerPoint.
While RC Bray does a fantastic job reading and changing up voices, my only issue is that his voice seems far too mature for Joe, who is supposed to be a very young man (early 20’s). His voice “feels” much older. It could be because I’ve listened to him read other audiobooks (at least 8), where he portrays much older characters, so that’s just set in my head.
The book is entertaining, but there is a whole lot of unnecessary stuff and lots of rinse and repeat. I’ll carry on with at least the next book, as I’m interested in learning more about the Elders, but from reading other reviews, it seems like it’s really stretched out, and answers aren’t given yet.
A lot of elements seemed to be borrowed from Stargate, which is our favorite show, so for now, it’s good.
