Historia
Monsters and beasts roamed the earth and were slain by soldiers and adventurers who were, in turn, killed by stronger threats. Heroes and villains created new epics and were forgotten when their successors appeared. This was the way of the Infinite World. Summoned into this chaotic place, a young boy with no name and no past must learn to survive. Bound to a master who doesn't care whether he lives or dies, he must become stronger. The question is: how?

Character driven without risk
Revisado: 01-07-23
I really loved the first book. The first book was a change of pace inside the genre. It being largely character driven rather than plot driven. However, I started to notice that there aren't really any stakes. There is no danger in failure for the character. This really subtracts from the book because you can't build tension without real costs. Also, every person with serious amounts of power seem to be written the same. Aloof distant but fair minded. Everything is always "I'm sorry to have intruded" then big scary char "mmph I'm agitated but it's ok. Things happen." I think this is all best summarized by the way the char fights. She makes it hard for her enemy to find her, gets far away, then let's her autonomous minions fight. Just no tension. The fight scenes are often far more boring than dialogue intensive scenes. They also often carry more tension which is weird. Finally the main character doesn't seem to have passion for anything. Not even getting stronger. Everything she does she does because it is expected of her. Not really because she wants to. I can understand need being a driving factor but surviving isn't living and wants color our world. It isn't bad it just isn't great either.

character driven cultivation hits perfectly
Revisado: 12-22-22
This over comes so many of the normal pitfalls of the genre. At the same time it capitalizes on many of the things that make the genre enjoyable. Cannot recommend enough if you enjoy cultivation stories but are very tired of flat characters and MCs that never develop. This series has something for you.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Pretty standard story telling from King. Way too much time spent setting the stage. Over a third of the book is just a slice of life and rather boring. It can be a little preach as well. The last half of the book moves really well. Though there isn't anything to really write home about. Overall largely unremarkable.
