Historia
The summer in question started out with hot, fun-filled days and new friendships. We had just turned thirteen and had our whole lives ahead of us. But that was before her. Before we became known as the Hixton Five and our lives become defined by one night. It’s hard to believe twenty years have passed since she was locked away. But now she’s free and strange things have started to happen. When I close my eyes, the creeping anxiety and fear is overwhelming and all too real. Because the monster is back, and I know she has a score to settle with us.

Awful over dramatic breathy narrator
Revisado: 06-06-24
I’m surprised nobody else mentions this. Couldn’t finish it because of the insufferable narrator.
I couldn’t get into the story either but I didn’t listen long enough to know if it gets better.

Good story but annoying voices
Revisado: 05-01-24
This is a good story. But the voices of both mothers are truly like nails on a chalkboard. Especially Leanne. Her voice is constantly quivering and on the verge of crying. Very annoying.

I couldn’t finish it. It’s so boring.
Revisado: 10-03-23
Nothing happens in this story plus the most mundane things are described to the annoying detail.
The narrator is terrible in my opinion. Terrible vocal fry.

Just so so
Revisado: 04-27-22
I so much want to like ths series. The narrator is really good. But the main characters are so boring. I had hoped that some more interesting facts would develop during this series but in all honesty that's not the case. They are constantly worried about eachother and being full of anxiety.
Also the jump from one part of the story to another is done without any break or pause. This is obviously a technical issue and not the fault of the narrator but it can be a bit confusing.
I don't t hink I am going to continue the series.

Good story ruined by narrator
Revisado: 03-01-22
Oh my word. I actually finished the book so that is enough proof the story is compelling. This narrator though. It’s like fingers on a chalk board for me. It’s lifeless and without any sympathy or passion. All the voices sound the same except the woman on oxygen. They all sound like drones.
I wish they would redo the narrating by Michael Beck.

Lots this super squeeky child voice, good story.
Revisado: 02-05-22
I love K.L Slaters books. I was pleasantly surprised that this was in the plus catagogue.
Most of her books are narrated by Lucy Price-Lewis who does an excellent job. Tuppence Middleton does a good job as well and I like her voices.
But the childs voice in this one is like fingers on a chalk board. I stuck with it because I do like this Authors books and it was a good read in the end. However there's a LOT of child in this book. Obiously that would be a problem for any narrator. I have no idea if Lucy Price-Lewis would've done a better job. This much childs voice is tough to listen to for a long time.
If this is your first KL Slater book I would start with another one, if not I'm afraid this will be your first and last which would be a pity.

Can't finish this, ruined by politics.
Revisado: 12-13-21
I'm so so disappointed. I was looking forward to this book. I know the author and narrators so was ready for diving into this story.
I hardly listed to the news anymore plus I am not political. I also am not taking sides in this masks/vax thing. However I do not want to constantly hear about it in a book. If I want that I will listen to a tainted podcast or news site. The whole reason I listen to audio books is that I don't want to be constantly reminded of the stressful and anxious world we live in.
Unfortunately this is exactly what this book is. Mask up mask down, take the vaccine, why are you not taking the vaccine, you should take the vaccine. UGH!!! I've listen to a lot of British detectives, lately of course many are written during the pandamic. None of these writers even mention it. I mean you are making up this whole story so why should you even include this distraction?
My advice is skip this one, don't waste your credit. I'm returning mine. Hope next one is better because I love myself a good Connelly detective.
As a side note the narrators sound super bored. I actually usually love both of them. Could also be my bias because I hate this book. Sorry.

Very predictable and way too long!
Revisado: 05-02-21
I was so excited about this book. I had read the Rose Code and The Alice Network and loved both of them. However this one was very disappointing. I listened to the first 1/3 of the book and couldn't go on, it's so boring (although Saskia Maarleveld does a great job).
I had a suspicion that nothing exciting would happen so I listened to the ending and sure enough, it ends exactly as you think it will after the first few chapters.
The characters are not likable and I just didn't care.
This could have been a good book if half of it was edited out.
