Historia
In 1922, Count Alexander Rostov is deemed an unrepentant aristocrat by a Bolshevik tribunal, and is sentenced to house arrest in the Metropol, a grand hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery.

Extraordinary book and the best narrator ever!
Revisado: 08-31-19
An aristocrat in Russia during the early days of the communist regime is sentenced to live out his days within the confines of the Hotel Metropole. We are treated to around 40 years of the incredibly rich life that he created around him. Often laugh-out-loud funny it is also a somber reflection on how to survive and thrive under such circumstances. I have heard lots of good narrators through audible but this one has to be the best. Do yourself a favor and listen to it!

Outstanding!!!
Revisado: 03-21-18
This is an extraordinary book! It really should be read with it’s companion book - Life After Life , although it can stand on own. The narration in both is exceptionally good. I am so sorry to have come to the end! Give it a try - Ursula and Teddy will stay with you for a very long time.

One of the best audible books I have heard
Revisado: 05-01-17
This was an extraordinary story and so beautifully told. I don't often put things on hold to listen to - or read - a book but could not put this aside. This is the story of two people, and a country and a continent, torn apart by war and held together by love and faith. The narration was outstanding.

Historia
The first time violinist Julia Ansdell picked up the "Incendio Waltz" in a darkened antique shop in Rome, she knew it was a strikingly unusual composition. The minor key and complex feverish arpeggios have a life of their own. But when she plays the piece, Julia blacks out and awakens to find her small daughter implicated in acts of surprising violence. When she travels to Venice to find the previous owner of the music, she uncovers a heart-stoppingly dark secret....

Spellbinding
Revisado: 05-13-16
This is an extraordinary story. If I could give it 10 stars I would. The history of world war 2 and what happened to the European Jews (among others) is often told. What is not so often told is the story of the heroes that were created by that hellish environment. Weaving in the story of the music, so beautifully told, and the present day mystery, made it so compelling I could not stop listening.
I only WISH that audible would use men for the male voices and women for the female voices. They had two narrators for this story - how hard could that be? It would be much more 'listenable'
