Slow start but not bad for a Christian book

I'm not religious so I didn't enjoy the many religious references. And while the book started slow, it overall wasn't bad. Definitely not as memorable as it had potential to be. Performance was fine. Writing got a little flat.

This whole series is just mediocre at best. The themes aren’t innovative which is fine but the writing is very rudimentary and disjointed. Too many characters and random “twists” that go nowhere. Narrator isn’t great—not enough distinction between male and female characters and they all begin to blend into one toward the end. This series is fine if you’re looking for something to put on in the background for mindless listening.

I really liked the last book series by this author and had high hopes for this series, but the voices as characters are overdone and distracting. It’s hard to tell who is real or imagined and where the narrator is speaking out loud vs with her voices. I understand it’s a big part of her storyline but it’s just… a little too chaotic to feel cohesive. It reminds me of the period where March was in the madhouse (in the last series)—it just felt dizzying. Hopefully the next book can salvage this series’s potential!

Story was fine but very predictable. Not that you come to this kind of book for anything earth shattering but I had hoped the author would be a little more creative. Every character was aligned with the movie (pretty woman) so it became boring after a while.

Narrator wasn’t bad but she had an odd take on the French accent.

The two narrators is annoying. Two different voices for all of the characters makes it just an annoying volley.

Storyline is a little drawn out. The lead male lacks depth. His reasoning is immature and incongruous with the rest of his character. Main female character gives something of a martyr energy without real character development or growth. Younger sisters are just awful; unnecessarily one-dimensional with a heavy emphasis on being bitter harpies which they’re too old for and will grate on your nerves.

The book fills a need but there are better ones out there.

As a Jane Austen fan, I wanted to like this book more than I did. It was drawn out unnecessarily, and the main character is not particularly clever or charming—I don’t disliked her but she’s not particularly engaging in a way that makes you want I know how she gets through it all. The mystery is also rather boring.

The footnotes are annoying at first but they become less frequent so it’s not as intrusive.

Overall—this ends up being background noise and quite forgettable.

The story starts out with an interesting premise, and while I love the other books by this author and appreciate the references to the Kesgraves, the connection is unnecessary. There are too many characters to get ahold of and too many random disguises to keep track of who is serving what purpose. The tale gets long and the conclusion is underwhelming for how long the story was built up. Feels like a smattering of traits were tossed at the protagonist and while she’s smart, she doesn’t give any reason for you to actually like her. If another book comes up for this series I’d really love to see the plot line and character development significantly more tightened up.

I really want to like this story but the narrator is too distracting. I don’t know where she’s from but her accents need a lot to work. Even her English accent sounds off. Her voice is lovely but this book would do better to re-cast the narrator for future stories.

And as far as the story goes… this is not the best plot line I’ve heard. It tries too hard to be a-typical and while the writing is decent the storyline is just not that captivating. I had hopes for more cohesion but it just really never comes together.

Rough reading/character loses some charm

Honestly the reading is… rough. Plenty of mispronounced words and names that truly make the story distracting. The narrator’s voice isn’t unpleasant, but “assignation” pronounced as “assign-nation” really takes you out of the experience.

The story could also use some work. I can’t get a gauge on the lead and it just seems hastily put together where plenty of opportunities are available to make the story flow.

Hopefully the next is a little more thorough on both counts.

There are a lot of characters in this book. A lot of pieces being juggled and the narrator’s voice was particularly grating this time. I don’t know what it was that was different because she’s ready before but it was somehow overly dramatic.

Also, there were glitches in the production so it repeated lines at some points.
