Historia
Rookie Det. Kenda investigates a 1975 case that begins with the murder of a beloved Colorado philanthropist and society figure whose husband, a gambler and womanizer, appears to have an air-tight alibi. Mentored by his veteran partner Det. Lee Wilson, a former Nashville singer turned skilled investigator, Kenda’s case quickly attracts attention from the FBI, CIA, and Interpol, for its similarity to a string of killings involving wealthy married women. All the murders appear to have been committed by a hired professional.

Plodding police procedural
Revisado: 01-16-24
A potentially interesting story written like a police report. No character development, just a narrative. I don’t think it could even pass if it were nonfiction written in this style

Historia
In the 1860s, Napoleon III, intent on curbing the rise of American imperialism, persuaded a young Austrian archduke and a Belgian princess to leave Europe and become the emperor and empress of Mexico. They and their entourage arrived in a Mexico ruled by terror, where revolutionary fervor was barely suppressed by French troops. When the United States, now clear of its own Civil War, aided the rebels in pushing back Maximilian’s imperial soldiers, the French army withdrew, abandoning the young couple. The regime fell apart.

A cautionary tale
Revisado: 06-30-23
Well told and in well researched detail, it reads like a novel. It’s a fascinating and humanizing description of imperialism at work. One wonders how we, the western powers, make the same mistakes over and over again— Afghanistan, Iraq, Vietnam, Central America to name a few. There’s a lot to learn from this book. The only thing missing is who profits from these bloody adventures.

Contrived
Revisado: 02-13-23
Much of the development in this book consists in the detectives learning just too late some crucial fact. One, ok, but over and over? There must be other plot devices.

You shouldn’t write an historical novel if you don’t know history
Revisado: 04-29-22
I liked the idea behind the novel, a retelling of the Faust story. But, you just should not write an historical novel if you haven’t researched that historical period. I had to give up because the anachronisms were so jarring and so frequent. And if the author didn’t know better, where were the editors?

What a cheesy ending!
Revisado: 04-24-16
I won't be a spoiler but, after you have slogged through hours of tediously overwritten prose you are bound to be disappointed by the completely contrived conclusion. Can someone please let the author know less is more? Every moment need not be described in endless detail. It undermines what otherwise might have been a good story.

Great book, but performance needs a director
Revisado: 01-04-16
Accents matter in performance, and the ones in this performance are shockingly inconsistent, cringe-worthily incorrect, and sadly distracting. This book deserves so much better.

Historia
September 8, 1900, began innocently in the seaside town of Galveston, Texas. Even Isaac Cline, resident meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Bureau, failed to grasp the true meaning of the strange deep-sea swells and peculiar winds that greeted the city that morning. Mere hours later, Galveston found itself submerged in a monster hurricane that completely destroyed the town and killed over 6,000 people in what remains the greatest natural disaster in American history.

Isaacs Storm
Revisado: 09-25-05
Well written, gripping story of the disastrous 1900 Galveston hurricane with a great deal of general information on hurricanes and their forecasting. Strikes eerie parallels with Hurricane Katrina. Makes you wonder if it is possible for us to learn from history. We should certainly give it a try. Just in that context, the book is well worth listening to.
