Historia
Nikki Serafino is enjoying the sunset from her boat in her beloved port city of Naples, Italy, when she discovers the body of a man in the warm waters of the bay. An investigator working as the liaison between local police and American troops, Nikki is certainly no stranger to violence and organized crime, but this case grows complicated when the victim turns out to be a U.S. Navy captain stationed at the nearby military base—and the autopsy reveals foul play.

Good Mystery, Great Reader
Revisado: 08-13-24
Well crafted mystery with engaging characters ( well, Enzo was a bit unbelievable). Fairly achieved ending. Simon Vance is the best. Every voice unique and suited the the character. I hope Ms. Heider will write some more. We got a special kick out of it having just returned from Naples, Italy and recognized a lot of the locations.

A pretty dull story made unbearable by reader
Revisado: 07-10-24
With a promising premise, WWII vet gets involved in overthrow of Iranian government in 1953 by the CIA & MI6, author drops the ball and glosses over the whole event. Story turns to the Vet's family life in Vermont which is devoid of interest or drama. I quite 1/3 of the way through The narrator sounds like he is reading an econ textbook. You can barely tell who is speaking. Why is this happening? There must be hundreds of talented readers to draw from. I am concurrently listening to "Close to Murder" by Anthony Horowitz,( terrific BTW) read by the author and Rory Kinear. Not only is each voice distinct, but it is entirely appropriate to the character.

Difficult listen because of monotone narration
Revisado: 05-07-23
As other reviewers noted, not the most scintillating of Jane Harper's novels. It was a lot of work to listen to because the narrator only had one voice for all of the characters and it was very hard to determine who was speaking. He didn't even raise the pitch for his female characters!?!

Another Excellent Book in the Palliser Series
Revisado: 07-31-19
I read all of the Palliser Novels and Barchester novels years ago. Having gotten fed up with contemporary fiction I went back to them, but as audio books. They are absolutely terrific. Trollope's characters are so real you can find them among your friends and neighbors. Their problems are universal, abuses of power, unsuitable marriages, forgiveness. Simon Vance is an outstanding reader. Each voice is unique and understandable. He even carries the characters voices across all the books. He adds so much to the story, it is like a radio drama.

Historia
The third novel in the Palliser series, The Eustace Diamonds is a satirical study of the influence of money and greed on human relationships in Victorian society. The story follows two contrasting women and their courtships. Lizzie Greystock and Lucy Morris are both hampered in their love affairs by their lack of money. Lizzie’s trickery and deceit, however, contrast with Lucy’s constancy.

Too much synopsis
Revisado: 06-19-18
After having listened to Classics of English Literature, I was looking forward to this book. It was informative, but Mr Weil mostly just gave a synopsis of the story and made them sound really boring in the process. He does have a great voice and I enjoyed the folk songs he sang.

Revisado: 06-19-18
A great survey course to help one appreciate the works one has already read and create a desire to read all the rest. Mr. Sutherland is a great story teller, slips in a few clever jokes and makes English Literature thoroughly enjoyable for the interested lay reader. Just the level of detail I like.

Great Story, annoying narration
Revisado: 05-05-17
Any additional comments?
Very dramatically captures the chaos and insanity of being in Vietnam. You never know exactly what is happening, which is probably how most of the soldiers felt. However, the narrator had this urgency in his voice that was exhausting. The individual voices were good, but the voice over just never let up
