Easy to digest
Revisado: 02-06-24
This presented Hoodoo and Magik in way that is easy to understand and didn't feel overwhelming to learn. For me, some things were affirming and it was nice to know my intuition might really be on to something, haha. Overall, I'll probably purchase a hard copy to markup and reference moving forward.

Historia
After years away from home, Summer Graves is back in Austin, Texas, to accept a new teaching position. Of all the changes to the old neighborhood, the most dispiriting one is the slated demolition of the high school her grandmother founded. Good story - Narrator... siiiighs
Revisado: 01-26-24
Overall, I think the story was pretty well written. I wish I'd read it on my own though. The narrator, to me, seems better suited for children's stories or news events. Some words like "advertisements" were pronounced strangely and it was distracting. It was nice to hear a story about a lesbian couple though, as these are harder to come by.

It didn't draw me in or make me fall in love with her like most autobiographical stories usually do. Was a bit shallow for me. It was her story though.

She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle-class peers. Maybe better with a bookclub to discuss it with?
Revisado: 02-28-20
I liked it enough. Think the story could've been more interesting/developed. I spent the whole story wondering what the climax was... I think with a book club it would've been interesting to discuss some of the topics raised throughout the book, but journeying the story individually-- it fell a little short for me. Thought it was a great performance! perfect narrator.

Mostly good!
Revisado: 08-27-19
I enjoyed the story. For me, I believe there wasn't really a "big moment" in the story, but it was overall a good book. The narrator toggled between the same voices she did in the other book and it was weird for me because my mind would recall the character from the previous book when the voice was used in this one. I probably should have read this one the old fashioned way, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

It reaffirmed the appreciation I have for the Obamas as individuals in correlation with and independent of their policies and initiatives. Her story provided some insight on things I'l had no clue about and inspired me to approach things in my own life differently.
