Haven't finished but narrator review is needed

I am only starting chapter 13 which is about 25% into the book. I find the story to be interesting and I like the characters.
problem is the female narrator. She is narrating the majority at this point and when she speaks for male characters, it is robotic with no emotion. Very distracting. I'm listening at 2.5 times now to try to avoid, but it's still an issue.
In fairness, she narrates very well in regular speaking voice and female characters.
Sadly, finishing the book will be a chore.

Disliked female lead

Female lead had so many secrets that it was hard to keep straight. Her family didn't know she was an assassin. Her best friend didn't know she was a chameleon. Her intended mate wrongs her (quite openly) and the people closest to her have no clue.
It's frustrating. Hard to believe in her bonds with friends and family when she is consistantly hiding everything.
She also is supposed to be a big strong assassin yet allows her mother and intended mate walk all over her at every turn.
The story had promise but I think it was lost by the above.

The book and writing is actually well done. It has a few glaring issues that bothered me enough to strike it down to 3 stars...no spoilers.
It's one of those books that gives you a teaser of the end before rewinding and showing the lead up events. Except the teaser, is never revisited at books end or explained.
Also, I didn't like the main character as she was willing to do anything for petty prizes.

3 stars is probably unfair

So, I enjoyed the story and the reader did a good job as well. My issue is more due to preference. I tend to read books with a strong female lead and I expect them to be read by a female.
This story jumps back and forth through point of view, so I am probably being unfair but still feel disappointed.
Will read the series on my tablet going forward.

Great Read

Not much gets answered by the end of the boom, but I was still satisfied. The heroine is very likeable and strong while still maintaining a humbleness. There was plenty of action and a little romance along with a dash of mystery. Interested to see what comes next.

Hard to follow narrator. Story was frustrating.

The book rotates between the male and female leads viewpoints. The narrator uses the exacts ame voice to portray each so it was often hard to follow as to who was speaking.

As for the story, I like fantasy reads but still want them to be believable. In this book, every person the girl know is secretly magical and just waiting for their moment to spill the beans. Its like the author liked the characters written and decided to give them bigger roles so gave them powers of some sort.
Also, the main characters are ridiculous. They are in love but jumping at every opportunity to run from each other only to mope about being apart. They get together, share a few kind words, being rude to each other almost immediately, and back to running away from each other.
Semi hidden villains are unveiled and discussed. The female lead then goes back to calling them friend. Doesn't trust them but has to be told multiple times they are bad.

Frustrating. Would not read further.

Somehow, I just never became attached to any of the characters. I couldn't get into the story.

So I this entire series is among my favorite of all time. Not only have I literally read all the books but I have listened to them twice. Love the world and all the twists and turns.
As for performance, I have actually searched for other books performed by Marguerite Gavin and listened simply because she was reading them.

I'll be honest, I am just reviewing books off my finished list. I am familiar with the series and spinoff, but not specifics of this particular book. Doesn't matter though because I have LOVED every book. Every single one of them in this series.
Annette Marie is among my favorite authors.

Not my usual cup of tea

So I don't normally listen to this style read. I am more of a werewolves, magic, and warriors kind of gal. This one was a free download and I thoroughly enjoyed the listen. I kept picturing the lead as friends from my school days with great personality.
