Historia
Alex Green is a young girl in a world much like ours, except for its most seminal event: the Mass Dragoning of 1955, when hundreds of thousands of ordinary wives and mothers sprouted wings, scales, and talons; left a trail of fiery destruction in their path; and took to the skies. Was it their choice? What will become of those left behind? Why did Alex’s beloved aunt Marla transform but her mother did not? Alex doesn’t know. It’s taboo to speak of.

Depressing for no Reason
Revisado: 05-28-24
I wanted to love this book, but halfway into the struggle, I realized that it was just dragging me down with it. The characters and their tragic mundane lives are simply introduced one after another without connection. I kept waiting for the plot to be introduced or some significant thing which tied them together. Instead, it appears to be no more than an obscure family tree, with hours-long narration describing how much the lives of each member sucked. Unless one listens straight through ( which would be a true feat of endurance) it's impossible to recognize WHY we are even learning about any given character.

Historia
1985. Anita de Monte, a rising star in the art world, is found dead in New York City; her tragic death is the talk of the town. Until it isn’t. By 1998 Anita’s name has been all but forgotten—certainly by the time Raquel, a third-year art history student is preparing her final thesis. On College Hill, surrounded by privileged students whose futures are already paved out for them, Raquel feels like an outsider. Students of color, like her, are the minority there, and the pressure to work twice as hard for the same opportunities is no secret.

the voice of Anita

the story was great, however the voice of Anita is constantly yelling and overly dramatic, which was stressful and irritating. Not a relaxing listen.

Historia
Inextricably linked with the fatwa called against its author in the wake of the novel’s publication, The Satanic Verses is, beyond that, a rich showcase for Salman Rushdie’s comic sensibilities, cultural observations, and unparalleled mastery of language. The book begins with two Indians plummeting from the sky after the explosion of their airliner, and proceeds through a series of metamorphoses, dreams and revelations.

Narrator changes the tone completely

I don't know if I can keep listening. The narrator sounds as if she is on the verge of tears, creating a feeling of pending disaster. This is exhausting and changes the experience of the story from cozy and reminiscent to one of anxious anticipation.

Historia
Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

When Jess and Clare Martin move from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, to their former college town in the Hudson River valley, they are hoping for rejuvenation - of their marriage, their savings, and Jess' writing career. They take a caretaker's job at Riven House, a crumbling estate and the home of their old college writing professor. While Clare once had dreams of being a writer, those plans fell by the wayside when Jess made a big, splashy literary debut in their 20s. It's been years now since his first novel.

Who's on First...
Revisado: 03-13-22
I enjoyed other books by the author, especially The lake of Dead Languages Blythewood and The Seduction of Water. This, though a captivating story, was confusing with the who is related to whom, and never mind, they're not actually related, or ....wait! are they?...
The conclusion still works. I think one is supposed to be riveted when the family tree is finally laid out, however, I'd lost track of that entire thread, so it really didn't matter. To be fair, I listen to these types of "easy" yet entertaining books in the background, while I'm doing other things like cleaning or gardening. Someone devoting more bandwidth to the listen might succeed where I failed.

Historia
Statistics show that 50 percent of what determines divorce is genetic temperament. And, if you are one of the 20 percent of people who are born highly sensitive, the risk of an unhappy relationship is especially high. Your finely tuned nervous system, which picks up on subtleties and reflects deeply, would be a romantic asset if both you and your partner understood you better. But without that understanding, your sensitivity is likely to be making your close relationships painful and complicated.

there are no links for accessing the tests for preliminary traits which help one distinguish themselves and partners as having or not having HSP traits. the author recommends taking these tests before moving on to chapter. soooo...do I return the book?
