But her family history is full of gaps, bloodlines cut short, family ties all ending in knots. When a picture of Faye – dirty and dishevelled, stumbling alone on the moors – goes viral, her life is thrown into chaos. Faye is convinced she is not that person in the photograph. But how can she be sure?

It wasn’t exactly great literature but it was ok. I wasn’t expecting murder and abuse.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Historia
Young Elly's world is shaped by those who inhabit it: her loving but maddeningly distractible parents; a best friend who smells of chips and knows exotic words like 'slag'; an ageing fop who tapdances his way into her home, a Shirley Bassey impersonator who trails close behind; lastly, of course, a rabbit called God. In a childhood peppered with moments both ordinary and extraordinary, Elly's one constant is her brother Joe. Twenty years on, Elly and Joe are fully grown and as close as they ever were. Until, that is, an earth-shattering event that threatens to destroy their bond for ever.

Engaging throughout
Revisado: 12-08-24
What a delightful surprise. The narration was perfect. Infrequently is the author also the right narrator. In this case, she was terrific. The story was engaging throughout the novel. I never lost interest. These characters are multidimensional. This was a whim purchase I’m so glad I got to listen to it.

Heralded as an instant classic of fantasy literature, Maguire has written a wonderfully imaginative retelling of The Wizard of Oz told from the Wicked Witch's point of view. More than just a fairy tale for adults, Wicked is a meditation on the nature of good and evil.

Not for kids, rated R.
Revisado: 12-02-24
Not for kids. There’s a rape, adultery, a thruple, a forced orgy where a tiger penetrates a teenager, and more sex. Not a problem for the adult reader, but the popularity of the film might send kids to read the book. Be aware. The narration was good, but I wonder why they didn’t pick a female narrator for a story with female main characters.

Historia
Madrid, 1957. Under the fascist dictatorship of General Francisco Franco, Spain is hiding a dark secret. Meanwhile, tourists and foreign businessmen flood into Spain under the welcoming promise of sunshine and wine. Among them is 18-year-old Daniel Matheson, the son of an oil tycoon, who arrives in Madrid with his parents hoping to connect with the country of his mother's birth through the lens of his camera. Photography - and fate - introduce him to Ana, whose family's interweaving obstacles reveal the lingering grasp of the Spanish Civil War.

Packs an emotional punch
Revisado: 06-13-24
I read about Spain’s medieval past before a recent trip there. In addition to ancient ruins, I saw more modern looking buildings that looked like they had been destroyed and patched up. I remembered that there was a civil war less than a century ago. Some of the older Spaniards I met would have lived under Franco’s dictatorship. This historical fiction novel was a very good introduction to some of the horrors committed by Franco’s fascist regime. There is more of an emotional connection than when starting with a nonfiction book. You *feel* 300,000 babies better when you read a story about one or a few of them. I recommend this to anyone curious about this dark time in recent history. As the author suggests at the end, I will now pursue nonfiction to learn more before I return to España.

Historia
Maj. Gen. Gregg Martin cut a striking figure in the Army: athletic, quick witted, devout, and studious, he was a natural leader. Thanks to his engineering and leadership knowhow, Martin was chosen to lead the thousands of combat engineers who paved the way for 100,000 Army troops to battle their way to Baghdad in 2003. Only years later would he learn how the pressure of organizing dozens of simultaneous life-or-death missions each day altered the biochemistry of his brain. Bipolar General offers a candid account of Martin's personal journey with undiagnosed mental illness.

Bad narration detracts from important message
Revisado: 01-28-24
Hearing a patient describe his own mania, depression, delusions, and grandiosity should be revelatory. But the narrator doesn’t do the story justice. He pronounces it BYE-polar DIS-order (rather than biPOlar disORder). He has a strange cadence in which he puts unnecessary pauses between words. He say “radar” like he’s a cross between George W. Bush and Forrest Gump. It’s too bad. This is an important story. I applaud General Martin for sharing his darkest personal details in an effort to broaden awareness of mental illness. I only wish I had purchased the text rather than the audiobook.

Terrific story!
Revisado: 11-12-23
Pleasant and engaging historical fiction. The narrator’s accents and intonation brought the characters to life. I like that Etienne is probably North African. There was obviously a great deal of research done about the documented history, the mythology, and the Camino itself. It all blends nicely into the story.

20 years on, the men and women involved in Operation ALLIANCE reflect on their lasting and poignant images of a history-defining period and how the AFP is working to help prevent the next phase in the evolution of terrorism. For these men and women, and those across the AFP, the victims of the Bali bombings will always be remembered. Their families, along with survivors and their families, will never be forgotten, neither will the lessons learned from that time - lessons that have shaped the AFP's global efforts in counterterrorism, forensic science, disaster victim identification, and family ...

Thorough, detailed, and compassionate
Revisado: 06-15-23
This short series provides a detailed examination and explanation of, not primarily the events of that night, but more so the investigation after. This is a profile in true courage. It’s from an Australian team who consistently expresses respect and appreciation for the Indonesians who led the investigation. All the speakers are respectful and sympathetic to the victims at all times.

Good, not a masterpiece
Revisado: 06-13-23
Trigger warning: this story might trigger PTSD symptoms in those with a history of violent trauma, burns, or anyone who has lost a child. It gives details about the Bali bombings. The story is good enough. It centers on a romance between two people who were present at the event and helped victims, as well as each other. There are two main Indonesian characters, definitely secondary to the American protagonists. The narration was good in terms of emotion, but she wasn’t great at the male voice. She handled the British and Australian accents ok. I haven’t (yet) been to Bali, so I can’t comment on the Indonesian accent. The accent on the Bostonians was abominable. I think it was an attempt to be Kennedy-esque (as opposed to a Good Will Hunting sound) but it just sounded like a bad British accent.
In the end, I’m glad I listened to learn more about the 2002 tragedy. Not bad, but not a masterpiece.
