Can’t get past the bad narration
Revisado: 02-12-25
The stories are vivid and would be lovely if not for the distractingly rushed narrator who over-enunciates consonants and emphasizes flat, nasal vowels—the opposite of a mellow, smooth voice that would lull someone to sleep.

Historia
An historic literary event: the publication of a newly discovered novel, the earliest known work from Harper Lee, the beloved, best-selling author of the Pulitzer Prize-winning classic To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman was the novel Harper Lee first submitted to her publishers before To Kill a Mockingbird. Assumed to have been lost, the manuscript was discovered in late 2014.

Unpolished story has some shining moments
Revisado: 01-25-16
Great performance by Reese Witherspoon--how nice to hear a believable, not-overdone southern accent!
The novel needs editing (consistent with the legend of its discovery & publication) but manages to shine a harsher light on paternalism and the complicated race relations in a small southern town, and the struggle to accept that loved ones can be good people yet imperfect. Some childhood flashbacks meander on, and some plot points are left hanging, but if viewed as a draft of a novel that inspired TKAM's plot/setting/characters rather than a masterpiece sequel, it's an interesting peek into the grownup Scout's struggle for moral independence.

Good for family listening
Revisado: 12-19-15
Nice mystery we enjoyed together on long road trip (kids are 10 & 14). A little unbelievable, but a fun tale of a millionaire who leaves his fortune to whoever wins the game he has set up for the heirs he invited to participate--discovering who killed him.

Interesting premise, but slow-paced
Revisado: 11-15-15
Any additional comments?
Excellent narration made this a very enjoyable listening experience. However, the story itself was too slow-paced for me and seemed to drag in places. It's a unique and interesting premise but not a lot of action.

Liked the story; not impressed with the narration
Revisado: 08-21-15
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Good characters, suspenseful but easy to follow plot.
Did C.J. Critt do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
The accents were uneven and inaccurate; some of the phrasing was very "un-Southern."

Historia
On a sullen, cloudy July day ten years since 7/7, the happy, confident and optimistic British Prime Minister is visiting a charity in East London. It’s just two months after the general election which saw John Campbell's government returned to power with a clear majority, the economy is on the mend and the coalition is fast becoming a bad memory. Suddenly, a man appears out of the crowd and shoots him three times in the chest.

This was well-dramatized and suspenseful. I liked the actors chosen and the way it combined politics and character into intrigue.

Vivid tale of friendship and women's roles in WWII
Revisado: 09-26-14
What about Morven Christie and Lucy Gaskell ’s performance did you like?
The voices and reading suited the characters well. It was like listening to the characters telling the story rather than someone reading the story to me. The accents were appropriate without being distracting or difficult to understand.
