Not bad, but definitely focuses a lot on distinguishing between how modern adaptations, like this path, are different from the generalized “Folk” versions since historically the folk paths have radicalized on the political extreme right towards Fascism & how Neo-Nazism, White Supremacy, White Nationalism have disguised themselves & distorted these same folk paths. There is mentioning of Reconstructionist paths, but these have a fairly to heavy hand in exclusionary behaviors which at times has facilitated the before mentioned folk path extremism to infiltrate their paths. They also tend to think in times past & are too rigid for contemporary times, meaning their practices isolate them &, again, are exclusionary in a variety of ways.

I will say that there is a fairly large section that focuses on trying to explain the magical nature of the runes & how to complete rituals or readings.

However, be ready if you know anything about pronunciation of Scandinavian words, especially in Old Norse, Anglo-Saxon, etc. In the Audio book read by Roger Clark, he does not pronounce anything relatively correctly. Roger Clark took no time & afforded no effort in trying to correctly pronounce anything other than his English script. He butchers every single rune name & the majority of the gods & goddesses. While he was easy to listen to, I found it completely annoying to hear an ignorant pronunciation frequently.

The content for what it was intended for I give the book a 4/5 since this was pretty generalized & an entry level book when researching what path may fit you.

I give Roger Clark’s narration a fat 2/5 for consistent annoyance.

I rate this overall at 4/5 due to the good narration & overall message of using the Golden Rule in all things. However, 99% of this book is examples of how using the Golden Rule benefitted those who used it, which is good to hear, but makes for this book to be long winded, even though it’s short.

Ultimately, this book can be summed into one sentence, “live by the Golden Rule since it is the only true ethic one should be concerned with”. This paraphrased summary makes sense, as John mentioned, it transcends all cultures, religions, creeds, etc globally & adds a level of accountability that, while potentially painful, is necessary as we humans are imperfect & naturally self-preserving regardless of outcome. John admits living by the Golden Rule can be difficult but is great skill to learn.

As a fan of the universe that had been introduced via the movie trilogies, I had made it a point that I wanted to read the entire universe to ensure that I understood the differences/nuances between Tolkien's writings & Hollywood's interpretation, as Hollywood always takes a certain amount of liberties. I absolutely loved the movies, especially once I obtained copies of the extended versions & craved more. Reading the Silmarillion prior to this helped have a better understanding of the universe as well, but I wasn't ready for the slight disappointment in the movies I gained after reading this book. The story is definitely different compared to it's movie adaptation & I'm glad that Bilbo's role is more realistic in the book in how he has to circumvent the dwarven stubbornness of his companions. While the movies do have a slightly different/softer ending for cinematic purposes, I like both endings while preferring the book's. A must read for any self-proclaimed fan of the universe for sure. Additionally, Andy Serkis (Smeagle) narrates this audiobook version; you can't pass up this great pairing since Andy's vocal prowess offers an amazing & immersive dynamic to the story while listening.

As a number of others have mentioned in their reviews across multiple platforms, this book is full of information & back story & I love it for that & allowing better understanding of the universe Tolkien created. However, as a number of those reviews also say, this book is dry to read & even a bit dry to listen to. Andy Serkis’ reading was definitely helpful indeed as I don’t believe I would’ve made it thru on my own. 4/5 for being dry, & 5/5 for Andy.
