The first couple of chapters about the history of mothers working were really interesting, and I was excited to keep reading. That was followed by really lengthy anecdotes about the author’s experience as a mother, which were less interesting but still felt worth reading, even if it was more of a memoir than a critical look at motherhood. Finally it devolved into a really detailed telling of the author’s personal experiences with the pandemic, which finally made me abandon the book. As someone who had children after the pandemic, I understand that that was a pivotal time for mothering and it should be examined… but it’s just not something I care to read personal experiences about in great detail. Take it up a level and analyze how mothers’ experiences changed during the pandemic, that’s absolutely interesting! But it’s a little alienating to newer moms (and probably moms with grown kids who weren’t living at home during the pandemic) to act like that brief period of time was the essence of the motherhood experience.
