China and Russia threaten America not to intervene as simmering tensions between India and Pakistan escalate. One after the other, missiles are launched that destroy satellites in orbit.... After long years apart, Mike Mitchell is reunited with old friends on a fishing trip in New Orleans. He brings his son Luke, now eight years old, while his wife Lauren attends a business meeting in Hong Kong. Suddenly, worldwide GPS signal goes out. Cell phones stop working. Communications go down. Is This Our Future?
Revisado: 12-04-24
Strong characters, even stronger story. Frighteningly plausible, and constantly engaging. The believable science only strengthens the narrative without cluttering it

A terrorist with a virulent grudge against the West, he’s disappeared into North Korea where he quietly launches cyber sneak attacks in service of Kim Jong-un. But now he’s about to unleash his virtual masterpiece - a computer virus that, once inserted into the command systems of a military, not only takes over, but also learns the art of war. First penetrating the Chinese, he has their war machine launch a series of attacks on the US Pacific forces.

Much More What I Hoped For
Revisado: 12-16-22
International intrigue with many nations and war all-but-unleashed. Outstanding. I prefer the narration of the earlier books, but only slightly. Overall a great entry in this series.

Historia
When FBI Special Agent Liz Soroush leads a raid on a local Minneapolis night club to capture a suspected terrorist recruiter, she ends up with a dead suspect and a community up in arms. But instead of a reprimand, she gets promoted to run a brand-new Joint Terrorism Task Force. The new threat is “jihadist mobilization”, young people in Minneapolis being radicalized to fight for terrorist groups like Al-Shabab and ISIS. As Liz digs deeper into the shadowy world of homegrown radicalism, she realizes the real threat has been in plain sight all along.

Enjoyable, but not as strong
Revisado: 12-13-22
I love the books by these authors, and I applaud the daring it took to tackle this particular subject. While I greatly appreciate the deeply personal connections, I'd like just a little more thriller and narrative surprise. Overall solid and important to the whole continuity of this alt history universe.

Historia
Who wants to be a superhero? Hope did, but she grew out of it. Which made her superhuman breakthrough in the Ashland Bombing, just before starting her freshman year at the University of Chicago, more than a little ironic. And now she has some decisions to make. Given the code-name "Astra" and invited to join the Sentinels, Chicago's premier super-team, will she take up the cape and mask and become a career superhero? Or will she get a handle on her new powers (superstrength has some serious drawbacks) and then get on with her life plan?

Time Travel Right Off the Bat?
Revisado: 06-26-21
Don't get me wrong, it was well done, but it was also the same confusing and, at times, hand-waving and deus ex machina you tend to get with time travel influenced plots.
For all that, I'm in for the ride. The world building is compelling, the characters engaging, the balance between "super" and "woah, stuff got a little too real" nicely attained, and the lead character far more engaging than I expected at first. It felt like a YA novel at first; the narration certainly felt that way. Ultimately, no, but the narrator's voice kept taking me there. She's skillful enough, and gave emotion and drama across the board - but her male voices were, frankly, painful and sometimes hard to even understand.
Others have said "Too much God." I'm a pagan, and I found her Catholicism in the face of tragedy and death just right.
Definitely recommend, looking forward to the next.

Enter the JCU with a Charming & Wonderful New Hero
Revisado: 07-16-20
I met Ian Healy at a sci-fi con. Dashing with his cool had and warm smile, he is a fine advocate for his own work. I was a guest at the show, he a book seller. As I was already wanting to start reading more superhero fiction, he had little trouble convincing me to check out his work. It didn't hurt that he's also a fellow gamer.
I started asking about continuity - it's important to me when I get into any new property. He made it clear that the Just Cause Universe has a lot of complex depth... and I was hooked before reading the first book, Just Cause.
Now I am even more hooked. Every character has a richness to them, no matter how little screen time they get, and Mustang Sally's journey from up-and-coming legacy hero to one of the premiere heroes of the JCU (you'll discover in later books) is a well-crafted through line in this series.
Welcome to the JCU, and enjoy the ride!

Historia
Seventh-grade Superheroes! It's not easy being a 12-year-old superhero, but the five kids of the neighborhood watch are doing the best they can. La Capitána: super-strong flier. Wheels: brilliant inventor. Hothead: catches on fire. Breezy: controls wind. Rascal: super-skateboarding. From their headquarters built into a repurposed Winnebago, they patrol the streets and alleys of their small hometown and dream of being big time heroes like Mustang Sally and the rest of Just Cause.

Delightful, Diverting, and a Fine JCU Detour
Revisado: 07-16-20
While I am very much a fan of the entire series, I wasn't sure I wanted to go to "Young Teen Hero" land, so I avoided this one for a while. Being a continuity fiend, however, meant I eventually had to catch up on this book.
I am glad I did - the characterizations are exceptional, and not cookie-cutter or trite. The story reveals more depth than I expected, as well. The performance has a lot of enthusiasm, but the reading can come off a bit stilted and overly-precise instead of cool and natural.
There are others in this series that I enjoyed more, but I am truly glad I listened to Neighborhood Watch and look forward to learning more about the story of these characters going forward.

The truth is still out there. The iconic hit that had millions searching for UFOs back in the 90s is now an exhilarating audio event, only from Audible. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson reunite as FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, joining an ensemble of original cast members in an out-of-this-world production.

Same Old Never Clear

Engaging, but as usual, the intense desire to be uber clever supersedes any chance of understanding what the hell actually happened.
