This is a cross between sociology and biology, though if you only listened to the introduction you’d think it was a diet book. I did, and was very close to returning it, but it’s really not. It’s a study of human behaviour and a fresh take on taste and psychology, and definitely a unique and memorisable read.

I bought this book when it first came out, when I was in college, and it completely formed my entire way of cooking. Since I graduated, I cook all the time, and every dish I make I literally have Samin’s cheerful light voice in the back of my head telling me to taste my food and trust my instincts.

All the info in here is versatile and topical to everything and super easy to incorporate into your habits. Plus, all her stories about life are super interesting and beautifully written. I’ve listened to this book at least five times, and I always get something new out of it.

I like how every event and turn of Darcy’s mindset fit into the events of the original like a jigsaw piece, so in that way it’s quite entertaining. I loved Darcy’s characterization and change.

HOWEVER (and I suppose a better person would not be so bothered), there were a few instances of blatantly incorrect grammar in the writing, and once the word “ironic” was used to describe a coincidence and not an irony. Not sure how this got past an editor.

The narrator is truly, shockingly awful. She has this singsongy way of reading that is mortifying and so incredibly annoying I found myself physically grinding my teeth. Just...how did this get past editing? I usually suck it up if narrators are not the best, and usually putting the book on 2x speed makes everything better, but not this time. Run-- don't walk--the other way, right now.

(I didn't get a chance to figure out if the story is good or not, so I've given it a neutral 3 stars.)

I loved this! Bertie was so unique and practical and blunt, and she was just what Sinclair needed to pull him out of his grief. Sinclair was, of course, a classic Jennifer Ashley hero, dark and brooding but so kind and SO. HOT. I’m super into men who love their kids, and the scenes with Sinclair and his children were wonderful. The kids themselves were also pretty realistically drawn and actually behaved like children.
The chemistry between the main characters was compelling, the story plot was interesting and not completely expected, and of course, the sex was great.
Also, I loved getting a glimpse of Eleanor managing Hart and his temper. Hilarious.

I didn’t want this book to end! The characters were very rounded and full fledged, the sex was SO. HOT. and the storyline was full of very interesting twists.

I can’t decide if I love Tom or Cassandra more. I want to be friends with them both. Tom is so funny with his awkward and unconventional social interactions and responses, and Cassandra is witty and sweet but in a dynamic, un-boring way. I was into the story from page one.

I thought Pandora’s story was my favorite, but this one is just as incredible if not more so. I haven’t been able to decide yet.

The very fact that Protestants are represented by people who can shift into animals should be enough to recommend this book.

This was an interesting premise, I think, and I’m always a fan of a touch of the magical. Unfortunately, though the first chapters were promising, the story—and in particular the hero Gabriel—became quite irritating and frustrating by 1/3 of the way through. He is extremely high handed, seems overly entitled and makes assumptions and expectations about the heroine that are unreasonable and presumptive. In short, he is very unlikeable and very inconsiderate. He is constantly resentful of the heroine and excuses his constant pestering of her with the fact that his people are suffering, but never stops to consider why the heroine, who has never been to Scotland and knows nothing of the people or the curse, should give up the life she wanted just to save strangers who’ve never done anything for her.

Quite a shame, because like I’ve said, the story premise had promise.

Yes, so the narrator is quite...enthusiastically dramatic with her voices. But the story is so well worth it, I promise. The characters are rather mature and reasonable most of the time, there’s a wonderful secondary romance, and the sex is toe-curling and searing to say the least. Make sure you listen on 2x speed, and the narrator shouldn’t detract much from the story.
