Historia
In the winter of 1918, at the height of World War I, history's most lethal influenza virus erupted in an army camp in Kansas, moved east with American troops, then exploded, killing as many as 100 million people worldwide. It killed more people in 24 weeks than AIDS has killed in 24 years, more in a year than the Black Death killed in a century. But this was not the Middle Ages, and 1918 marked the first collision between modern science and epidemic disease.

Interesting
Revisado: 01-11-21
The narrator was good and not distracting, and overall the info presented was very interesting and educational. The book was a bit hard to follow and did jump around a lot and was pretty long. I’d say if you’re interested in epidemiology, or want some historical reference on how the US responded to the 1918 Influenza take the time to listen. It is especially fun to listen to how things went back then compared to how things are going now.

Historia
In July 1881, Lt. A. W. Greely and his crew of 24 scientists and explorers were bound for the last region unmarked on global maps. Their goal: Farthest North. What would follow was one of the most extraordinary and terrible voyages ever made. Greely and his men confronted every possible challenge - vicious wolves, sub-zero temperatures, and months of total darkness - as they set about exploring one of the most remote, unrelenting environments on the planet. In May 1882, they broke the 300-year-old record, and returned to camp to eagerly await the resupply ship. Only nothing came.

So good.

I steer clear of books like this, but this story was gripping....through the whole book. The narrator did a great job and wasn’t distracting. The way the story was presented was easy to follow with descriptive details that sucked you into being there. Ugh the story is just heart wrenching at times.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

Okay story, good narration.

I must have missed the mark on this story. I thought just okay and nothing amazing. I did like the second story line about the painting and what happens to it. However the entire thing was painfully slow and I couldn’t keep my head in it. I liked the characters themselves and found them interesting but I just kept feeling like there should be more out of the main character. He didn’t start thinking profoundly or analyzing his life behaviors until the end of the last chapter. It just seemed out of place. The entire story was him having a severely delayed reaction to the events that take place around him. Out of spite I finished listening to it.
