Historia
Quinn Alexander has committed an unthinkable crime. To avoid spending her life in prison, Quinn makes a run for it. She leaves behind her home, her job, and her family. She grabs her passport and heads for the northern border before the police can discover what she's done. But when an unexpected snowstorm forces her off the road, Quinn must take refuge at the broken-down, isolated Baxter Motel. The handsome and kindly owner, Nick Baxter, is only too happy to offer her a cheap room for the night. Unfortunately, the Baxter Motel isn't the quiet safe haven it seemed to be.

I normally love Freida but this narrator just ruined it for me. Too bad.

Narration
Revisado: 02-18-25
Hard to get past poor narration. I usually like her books but this one didn’t do it for me. I also felt like the ending was a little too on the nose.

Historia
My fiancé brought me tea and scrambled eggs in bed that morning, and we snuggled together, talking about buying our rings, and about our perfect wedding next year. Then we headed into town. He held my hand and gazed at the ring I liked best, a smile spreading slowly over his face. Then a glass of bubbly to celebrate. I felt flushed, excited and ready for the rest of my life with the man I loved. We race to get on the train home. It screams to a halt and I run towards its open doors. Made it. I think he’s right behind me — but when I turn around, he’s gone.

Performance was great but ending was awful :(
Revisado: 12-21-24
I told several friends how much I was loving this book as I was still listening. I told them they all had to get it. Then I got to the ending and I had to tell them all not to waste their time and money.
It was like the author had no idea how to wrap it up. Aside from only implying the twist (I seriously thought there was a chapter missing), this twist was just cruel and unsatisfying. Yes, the “bad guy” got what was coming to them but at the expense of everyone else. Not one happily ever after for any of the characters.

The story is very good.
Revisado: 08-30-24
The story is very good. And when the narrator sticks to narration, she’s very good. But the characters were all very odd. The accents were a bit annoying. Especially Julia’s. She sounded like a two year old learning to speak. It’s very distracting. I’ve had a hard time sticking with it because I tend to tune her out. But I’m sticking with it because it’s a good story.

Awful Naration
Revisado: 07-19-24
It’s really too bad because the story itself is good, but the narration was so awful that I found myself tuning it out which sort of defeats the purpose. I found myself looking forward to her husband’s disappearance thinking I wouldn’t have to listen to him anymore. I was bummed to discover there were flashbacks.
And Stella’s desperation was so over the top that I honestly felt like I was listening to an audible opera. It’s one cringeworthy sentence after another. The only reason I’m still listening is that the story has me hooked. But it’s painful.
I know it can sometimes feel like nails on a chalkboard when men narrators try to sound like women and vice versa. But nails on a chalkboard doesn’t even begin to describe the pain of listening to this. I would definitely recommend changing the narrators so future listeners can enjoy what otherwise is a good story.
I’m sorry to be so harsh but I can’t understand who picks these narrators sometimes.

Wanted to like it but had a hard time
Revisado: 06-05-24
Honestly, the last couple novels have been a disappointment as was this. I didn’t find the premise believable and for the most part, I didn’t like any of the characters (or the battling accents). I know they weren’t supposed to be that likable in the first place but for me that was the problem. I didn’t care about anyone enough to root for them.
Also, the sudden mention of The Woman in Cabin 10 really threw me. Don’t get me wrong, I loved that novel. But it was so jarring to hear mentioned in the middle of a life or death crisis that I lost all connection to what was going on and pretty much checked out after that. It felt like nothing more than a gimmick which was disappointing.

Of course, I’m not going to murder her in the night. I need my laptop back first. That’s the whole point of making friends with Emily Harper, author of the hugely successful novel Diary of an Octopus. So I could get into her apartment and take back what’s mine. Emily doesn’t know who I really am. She thinks I’m her biggest fan, her new best friend who happens to need a place to stay for a few days. She doesn’t realize the laptop she found—and took—from a busy airport almost two years ago was mine. I don’t care about the laptop, just what's on it: my diary.

Three years ago, the original Mrs. Westmore suffered a nervous breakdown—and hasn’t uttered a sound since. Not a physician, psychologist, or world-renown specialist has been able to elicit so much as a word from the silent woman … until now.

Huge glaring error
Revisado: 12-26-23
Sylvia’s mother Kathleen says she had no idea her daughter had been in an accident three years earlier because she hadn’t heard from her in three years. Yet Marie Claire, Sylvia’s former mother in law is obviously very aware of Sylvia’s accident. YET Marie Claire and Kathleen are good friends and see each other and talk to each other frequently. How on earth no one caught this huge glaring error is beyond mind-blowing…

Historia
Mary has everything. Beautiful and rich, she lives on an exclusive street in the heart of the city, in a house with gorgeous views and an immaculately maintained garden. Her life looks perfect. But behind closed doors the truth is very different. Her husband, Andrew, barely speaks to her, spending his days down in the basement alone. Her teenage nephew is full of rage, lashing out with no warning. Her carefully constructed life is beginning to fall apart.

Revisado: 12-13-23
This could have been a good story but it was so confusing. In part because there weren’t any dialogue tags so I never really knew who was talking. But also, I wasn’t really sure who the story was supposed to be about. The description makes it sound like it’s about Mary. In the end, yes. You know it’s about Mary. But the way the story is introduced, and the story that followed made it seem like it was Connor’s story. Quite honestly, I’m not even sure I understood the ending.
I wanted to like it but I was disappointed.
