Patrick Bateman moves among the young and trendy in 1980s Manhattan. Young, handsome, and well educated, Bateman earns his fortune on Wall Street by day while spending his nights in ways we cannot begin to fathom. Didn't go anywhere...
Revisado: 10-22-23
I hated this book and was disappointed I spent my time listening to it. Like others have said it does get very graphic and can be hard to listen to but that wasn't my issue. The problem was that the story never actually turns into anything other than a series of very disjointed chapters about anything from rapes and murder, to men's clothing, to various dates. All fine if there was something to tie it together but I felt like I got the point an hour in and then waited 10 more hours hoping they'd turn it into some kind story. Not great...

Really enjoyed this!
Revisado: 09-29-22
I knew Pete Holmes story from his stand up and some of his podcast but I was surprised at the depth of this book. If you just want a laugh there are funny parts but the main focus is on 'the heroes journey' from being a repressed and ashamed western Christianity church kid to building a new more personal and adaptive faith outside of the church. This book went deep and I thoroughly enjoyed the journey. Thanks Pete!

Historia
Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Great!
Revisado: 04-07-22
Hobbit is not my favorite of the LOTR saga but wanted to listen to the entire epic chronologically so had to start with this one. Andy Serkis gives the most energetic narration of any book I've ever listened to. For some books this would be a little much but with this one it feels completely appropriate! Made it such a unique and enjoyable listen!

Historia
It was long ago, but not as long as it seems: The Berlin Wall fell and the Twin Towers collapsed. In between, one presidential election was allegedly decided by Ross Perot while another was plausibly decided by Ralph Nader. Landlines fell to cell phones, the internet exploded, and pop culture accelerated without the aid of technology that remembered everything. It was the last era with a real mainstream to either identify with or oppose. The ’90s brought about a revolution in the human condition, and a shift in consciousness, that we’re still struggling to understand.

not what I expected but enjoyable
Revisado: 03-05-22
I knew of Chuck Klosterman from his short essays like sex drugs and Cocoa Puffs. when I started the book it wasn't what I expected and I initially didn't think I would like it. by the end though I really enjoyed it and I think he did a good job of connecting Trends in the 90s to things that are still going on today. I was afraid it was going to be overly heavy on the Nostalgia which I'm not a big fan of but instead I think it was a critical analysis of a decade and the implications for the future

Interesting listen but the format has some flaws
Revisado: 01-14-22
If you're interested in Anthony Bourdains life this is a great resource. The format could be a little fragmented so it was hard to follow at times. More of a collage of Tony adjacent people's observations of him than a linear narrative about his life. It was an interesting way to construct a biography but it left me wishing there was more of Tony's perspective in the book. You hear everyone else's takes on points of his life but you never really know what he was thinking. Again a creative way to approach a life story but it's like learning about someone by talking with their friends rather than to the man himself.
