Historia
In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.

decent YA novel
Revisado: 05-09-23
interesting premise, boring execution with a simple plot twist. I couldn't get attached to any of the characters or really hate any of them either. The romance was very blah, and the flow was halting and stuttering, which might actually fit the protag's voice.

Historia
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Tries so hard
Revisado: 01-13-23
This book tries so hard to be edgy and hip, but it just kind of falls flat and feels inauthentic. There is some good info on here though, so I'm sure the format will resonate with some. It just didn't resonate with me.

decent quick story

pretty decent, if kind of generic. I still want to know what happens though... the narrator was good, but didn't seem to give the right emphasis for emotional scenes.

it was alright. Like a hallmark movie with a little bit worse language. The cliches were there, and the story simple.

Historia
During his years in a neural-health facility, Pat Peoples has formulated a theory about silver linings. He believes that his life is a movie produced by God, that his mission is to become physically fit and emotionally supportive, and that if he succeeds, his happy ending will be the return of his estranged wife, Nikki. When Pat goes to live with his parents, everything seems changed: no one will talk to him about Nikki, and his new therapist seems to be recommending adultery as a form of therapy.

The movie was better!
Revisado: 07-31-21
I watched the movie for this book a while ago and remembered liking it so I thought I'd check this out. I enjoyed the mental monologues in the beginning, but quickly found them annoying. The narritive had a halting rhythm to it that was probably appropriate for the protagonist, but it seemed exaggerated. the Narrator did a great job bringing emotion to the story that would jave been lacking otherwise. I think the word choice for different places was shockingly juvenile for the subject matter and I couldn't find myself believing that the protagonist would call something "apart time" or the "bad place". Overall, I thought the book was just okay and it'll probably give more perspective on the movie.

The Battle of Serenity Valley was the turning point that led the Independents to their defeat at the hands of the Alliance. Yet the Browncoats had held the valley for weeks against all odds, before being ordered to lay down their arms. Command stated they refused to send in airpower because the ground war was "too hot". But the soldiers who were there insist that was not true.... While picking up a new cargo on Persephone, Captain Malcolm Reynolds is kidnapped by a bunch of embittered veteran Browncoats who suspect him of sabotaging the Independents during the war.

Nostalgia trip
Revisado: 01-02-21
I enjoyed it. i enjoyed the series it's based on as well, but not enough to memorize all of the events that happened, just overall tone. I think this book addressed that well, and there was a few references to the TV series throughout to help me remember some more of the specifics. I found myself thinking more than once, "Oh yeah, that happened." It's also quite approachable for someone who hasn't seen the series or just wants to try it.

Why did I listen to this?
Revisado: 09-20-20
I just can't listen to any more of this nonsense. The basic pattern of each book is that the guy and girl are stuck together for some arbitrary reason. They want each other, tell themselves they can't, then decide they can, then something happens to make them fight, and finally they make up. All of the books follow this pattern. The word choices are uninspired and repeat themselves. I think most of the adjectives revolve around food, for example devouring each other, feasting, and etc. There's always a part about the girl who had been eating healthy digging into some junk food throughout the book. How are the guys so chiseled when they're workaholics, but there's no mention of going to the gym or working out, except for the first book. Lastly, why can't a kiss, just be a kiss? Why does it always lead immediately to sex?

Historia
Motherhood has turned out to be a lot weirder and lonelier than Mary anticipated - has the world gone crazy, or has she? Most of the time, it feels like both. But when her oldest starts kindergarten, Mary meets another mom, Fiona, and the two form an unusual yet exhilarating friendship. There’s only one problem: Mary doesn’t really like Fiona’s husband, Andreas. What begins as a minor irritation keeps intensifying and changing shape in Mary’s mind as Andreas’s perceived wrongdoings pile up, until she can’t distinguish integrity from self-sabotage.

It was alright
Revisado: 09-03-20
The characters are undeniably human, with human anxieties, but nothing really happens. No real conflict, resolution, just a snapshot of everyday life. I didn't hate it, but there wasn't much for me to like either.

Wonderful

This is a wonderful story set in contemporary times where suspicions and betrayal aplenty. There was a generous helping of love and generosity all around making what could have been a very dark tale into something filled to the brim with light.
