Historia
Around 950,000 years ago, a family of five walked along the beach and left behind the oldest family footprints ever discovered. For award-winning historian Simon Sebag Montefiore, these poignant, familiar fossils serve as an inspiration for a new kind of world history, one that is genuinely global, spans all eras and all continents, and focuses on the family ties that connect every one of us. In this epic, ever-surprising book, Montefiore chronicles the world’s great dynasties across human history to the people at the heart of the human drama.

I struggled to follow the book in audio format. I think this book would be excellent to read. Nonetheless, the chapters I did follow were enjoyable and informative.

Historia
In What It Took to Win, the eminent historian Michael Kazin identifies and assesses the Democratic Party's long-running commitment to creating "moral capitalism" - a system that mixed entrepreneurial freedom with the welfare of workers and consumers. And yet the same party that championed the rights of the white working man also vigorously protected or advanced the causes of slavery, segregation, and Indian removal.

Timely and informative History Book
Revisado: 03-24-22
What it Took to Win is the best history book I have seen in a while.
Without missing the bigger historical picture and people, the book details more fringe historical figures, such as Francis Perkins Perkins. The information can be dense like in any history book, so I will probably listen to it a couple of times. However, this is also a reflection of a well-researched and written work.
The book is timely ending at the beginning of the Biden administration and discussing the relevance of Bernie Sanders, Alejandra Osorio Córtez, and other relevant contemporary Democrats. Moreover, the book matches its present-day relevance with an insightful portrayal of the Democratic Party's origins.
I look forward to this book's Republican counterpart (hint, hint). The Republican Party evolution would be a fascinating book. I hope this author will do one.

African Americans have played major roles in building the great American experience and building the history of the United States. From years of perpetual slavery to years of Jim Crow, African Americans have endured mutilations, genocide, lynching, fear and intimidation and they are still standing today making America strong... from slavery to the White House.

Pleasant surprise
Revisado: 04-23-20
This book was better than I expected. In many history books, the author only examines superficially historical moments. In this book, however, I really liked how the author went deep into many key moments. For example, the author went in depth into Harper's Ferry, the Emancipation Proclamation and the strategy behind it, and other inflection points in African American History.
If you are looking to get a bit more out of a history book, consider this one.
I can see myself listening to this book again.

Historia
For better or worse - be it militarily, politically, economically, technologically, or culturally - Americans have had a profound role in shaping the wider world beyond them. The United States has been a savior to some, a curse to others, but either way such views are often based on a caricature of American actions and intentions. American foreign relations, then, is a subject of immense global importance that provokes strong emotions and much debate, but often based on deep misunderstanding.

Pleasant Surprise
Revisado: 02-29-20
I only bought this book because I had a $10 credit I wanted to get rid of. Nevertheless, I was pleasantly surprised. This is an excellent primer to American Foreign Relations for somebody who wants a quick overview. The book does not go into too much depth. But, hey! What do you expect? The book is slightly over four hours long. Nevertheless, it packs a big punch for those few hours.
Even still, I learned a few jewels of knowledge that I did not know before. I would recommend this book as an introductory course to anybody looking for a quick overview. After this book, the reader would have a good foundation to branch out to more in depth studies.

Douglas Brinkley takes us on the incredible journey of the United States - a nation formed from a vast countryside on whose fringes 13 small British colonies fought for their freedom, then established a democratic nation that spanned the continent and went on to become a world power. This book will be treasured by anyone interested in the story of America.

Great review of American history and a bit more
Revisado: 01-21-20
I really liked this book. I have been studying a lot of American History lately and this book will dig down a bit further. I previously read Rise to Globalism (Stephen Ambrose and Douglas Brinkley) and therefore had high expectations. This book did not disappoint.
I recommend this book to anybody who endeavors to take a first shot a learning American history or who has studied American History before who wants to get a bit more value.
This book is well worth it!

Great overall book!
Revisado: 01-15-20
I liked how the book got into more detail than other history books that I normally read. I felt that the book started off a bit slow. But then it got its stride and I was really captivated by the narrative. The narrator has a nice soothing voice.

In The End Is Always Near, Dan Carlin looks at questions and historical events that force us to consider what sounds like fantasy; that we might suffer the same fate that all previous eras did. Will our world ever become a ruin for future archaeologists to dig up and explore? The questions themselves are both philosophical and like something out of The Twilight Zone.
