Historia
We are in the midst of a global mental health crisis, and mental illnesses are on the rise. But what causes mental illness? And why are mental health problems so hard to treat? Drawing on decades of research, Harvard psychiatrist Dr. Chris Palmer outlines a revolutionary new understanding that for the first time unites our existing knowledge about mental illness within a single framework: mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain. Brain Energy will transform the field of mental health, and the lives of countless people around the world.

Very impressive summary of the brain energy theory
Revisado: 01-31-23
I love how Dr. Palmer brings together the information in an understandable way. I have been anxiously awaiting this book and was not disappointed. It will take time and research to enhance the available treatment options, but this book already illustrates many avenues of exploration.
Mental health challenges run in my family. I hope some of these new approaches bring help to them and many others.

Listen at 1.5x speed
Revisado: 10-16-21
I nearly didn't buy this book due to the reviews about the narrator.
TIP: I noticed while listening that if I increase the speed to 1.5x or faster, suddenly the narrator sounds interesting and enthusiastic about the material. The content is interesting so far (I'm not done yet) and far more enjoyable at the faster speed.

Historia
Everyone knows how hard it can be to maintain a healthy diet. But what if some of the decisions we make about what to eat are beyond our control? Is it possible that food is addictive, like drugs or alcohol? And to what extent does the food industry know, or care, about these vulnerabilities? In Hooked, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Michael Moss sets out to answer these questions - and to find the true peril in our food.

Fascinating topic and covers a lot of ground
Revisado: 04-04-21
I don't share the author's sense of futility when it comes to "dieting" and I think he is too pessimistic when he argues that we are doomed to not be able to lose weight, only maintain our unhealthy weight. I do agree that the science around what the most effective foods are for optimizing our health is sketchy at best, but "ketogenic" diets have a LOT of good evidence for being effective and sustainable. The trouble is partly that keto is often lumped in with all the other "low carb" diets and the body chemistry is completely different.
My other main complaint is the section on evolution and how it impacts our food choices. He implies that a lot of the ways that we can get hooked to food are uniquely human and yet points to rodent studies for evidence. Obviously these mechanisms have been around a while. They are uniquely EXPLOITED by and against humans.

I love this new book. My life was changed by reading Any Way You Can and now I am ready to share the information with others so they too can learn the truth of ketochemistry. A must read for anyone trying to live in ketosis for a lifestyle change - not a fad, but a way of life.

Historia
Based on 20 years of investigative reporting and interviews with 100 practicing physicians who embrace the keto lifetstyle as the best prescription for their patients' health, Taubes' book puts the ketogenic diet movement in the necessary historical and scientific perspective. It makes clear the vital misconceptions in how we've come to think about obesity and diet (no, people do not become fat simply because they eat too much; hormones play the critical role) and uses the collected clinical experience of the medical community to provide essential practical advice.

Excellent introduction to LCHF Ketogenic diets

This book is a great primer on LCHF eating and why it might make sense for a lot of people. I appreciate the way the argument was presented and found it very compelling. Learning how to think about how to eat is very important!

Great information, meticulously researched!
Revisado: 05-04-20
This book and the accompanying text edition are my new favorite sources of info for diet-related information. Dr. Saladino explains complicated subject matter well, without glossing over too many of the technical details. I suspect from reading/listening he has enough material for another book or two in the future. Looking forward to those.
