Introduction to Tsongkapa's Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment

The reason I put that sort of obvious title is because that is something you should know about this book. It is the Dalai Lama explaining the aforementioned text. He says it is his main guide and he likes it very much. I like his explanations of it very much too. The Dalai Lama here writes very clearly and what you should do and what is necessary to attain enlightenment and details the steps and practices and philosophies. It is more directive than some of his other texts, by which I mean that in this text he tells you what to do, while in others he just examines what is good etc. One last thing you should know is that he has written several books examining Tsongkapa's works. Tsongkapa made the small, medium, and great treatises, and I think the Dalai Lama wrote books on each of those, maybe several books on each. My point there is that many of his books deal with the same subject, so you might want to pick the best one, instead of reading all.

The writing style feels very much addressed to the reader, as if the Dalai Lama wrote this with you in mind, as opposed to some of his other books which are just transcripts of some of his lectures.
I think the main lessons in this book were about how to follow the path to enlightenment, how to prepare your body and mind, how to find a teacher, how to know what is the right path and what are the right practices. I think the text is written very well, better than some other of His Holiness's books that I have read. Brian Nishii as narrator was good but not 5 stars.

I think this is a translation of "The Second Part of the Stages of Meditation by Acharya Kamalashila".
I think this book focuses on wisdom & understanding regarding emptiness, non-inherence, impermanence, lack of independent existence. Specifically this, rather than other aspects, such as karma.
Ken McLeod is a good narrator.
The Dalai Lama always writes good books. If you can commit to examining his books, they will benefit you much more than westernized, simplified, americanized, christianized "buddhism" marketed by people who are not experts.

I'm sorry, but this book seemed like the product of a delusional mind. Frankly, to me, much of Christianity seems delusional. I find Buddhism much more helpful and true. I think you would too. I enjoy Buddhist texts much more than this, and I recommend that you read Buddhist texts instead of this, if you are looking for something religious.
Even if you're a Christian, you probably won't find this sensible either. You may be inspired, but after reading this your understanding of Christianity will probably be only more muddled.
The one positive was the narrator. He was good. Minus 1 star though, because he has to be a little wacky to have chosen to narrate such nonsense as this.
FYI, I did thoroughly listen to the entire 9+ hours of this audiobook.

Truly a blessing

I think any book written by the Dalai Lama is a blessing to behold and to read and to hear. A reader can only be disappointed if an author bills a book as written by the Dalai Lama but the book is in reality mostly the author's creation. It is my opinion that this book and program are relatively very true to the Dalai Lama's beliefs, and that most of the words in here are direct translations of what the Dalai Lama said. It is a very profound book.

In comparison to another of His Holiness's books, called "Beyond Religion", this book is more religious. Here he conveys his teaching in a way rooted in the traditions of Buddhism.
In comparison to another of His Holiness's books, called "Buddhism", this book is much easier to understand. Even if the concepts are hard, that is the main obstacle to understanding. You will find the language easy to understand, which will help with comprehension of the concepts.

The narrator is well qualified to read the book, being the chief editor, and a Buddhist monk. His voice is nice to hear. He never falters, his voice is not grating, but rather smooth. He makes no pronunciation errors. He never seems bored or confused by the material he is reading. He is a good medium to convey the Dalai Lama's words.

Please read this book, or listen to this audiobook, if you can. Thank you.

Fantastic. Brilliant. Enlightening. 100% Worth Reading.

I am at a loss for words to describe the great goodness of this book.
So I'll move on to the narrator. He was perfect, too. It seems he was truly enjoyed the reading, and agreed with what he was reading - 0% of it seemed like he was just spouting someone else's words without really thinking about them.
Please read this book.

Good Book, Poorly Abridged

I'm slightly biased because I want to rate all Dalai Lama's books 5 stars, so more people will read his teachings. In an honest rating I would say 4 or 5 stars. I found this book was more clear than some of his books (e.g. "Buddhism") and less clear than some of his books (e.g. "Ocean of Wisdom"). Ken McLeod as narrator was fantastic. It is important to have someone who understands the reading material as a narrator, and it seems that Ken McLeod understands it very well. You would hate to have someone reading such sacred words as if they're just syllables to be pronounced.

I did not like the abridgement. Audiobook publisher, why did you do this? I read the less-abridged text ("abridgement" is relative since it's just a collection of lectures, so any lectures cut out technically make it abridged), and never was there a part that was cut from the audiobook that I thought deserved to be cut. It is just illogical. Someone who wants to listen to 4.5 hours of the Dalai Lama's words on complex topics will be just as happy, or happier, if they get to listen to 5 hours of his words. It is arrogant to abridge in the way they did. To cut out some of the Dalai Lama's words from his explanations assumes that (1) the Dalai Lama was speaking unnecessary words, which is unlikely, and to ascertain that, the editor would have to know exactly what the Dalai Lama was trying to convey, and simultaneously be able to convey the Dalai Lama's words more concisely. None of these suppositions are likely. The result of the abridgement is that the listener loses clarity when trying to understand what the Dalai Lama was saying - because potentially explanatory remarks were cut out. Shame.

The content is great, Ken McLeod as narrator is great, but if there was a rating for publishing quality I would give 2 or 3 stars. Overall 4 or 5 stars.
