Historia
The Frosts are a typical American family. Barb and John, married almost 50 years, are testy and bored with each other...who could blame them after all this time? At least they have their daughters - Barb's favorite, the perfect, brilliant Juliet; and John's darling, the free-spirited Sadie. The girls themselves couldn't be more different, but at least they got along, more or less. It was fine. It was enough. Until the day John had a stroke, and their house of cards came tumbling down. Now Sadie has to put her career as a teacher and struggling artist in New York on hold....

Third Kristin Higgins listen...
Revisado: 07-29-23
I've listened to 3 of her books, and loved all 3. I've noticed a pattern though, with the types of characters she tends to create. I actually think I like that I can somewhat foresee the personalities of them. Makes me feel like I am kinda like a bystander in her stories.

Historia
Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same well-to-do mansion block in London for decades. She lives a quiet, comfortable life, despite her deeply disturbing, dark past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Nazi Germany at age 12. She doesn’t talk about the grim post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, who was the commandant of one of the Reich’s most notorious extermination camps. All The Broken Places moves between Gretel’s girlhood in Germany to present-day London as a woman haunted by the past.

The story of The Boy in the Striped Pajamas is very difficult to describe. Usually we give some information about the audiobook, but in this case we think that would spoil the listening. We think it's important that you start to listen without knowing what it is about.

This particular story didn't happen, but it could have. Yes, this is a fictional account of an event that, 80 or so years ago, millions of Jewish people WISHED we're fiction, rather than their reality. People who are offended by books like this because "children shouldn't be reading this sort of thing" or think we should move on from it and stop talking about it....I'm sorry, but this is an incredibly naive and childish, and DANGEROUS viewpoint to hold. These things happened, and the people involved didn't have the luxury of an abundantly large historical record like we have, to help them to see the signs of what was coming, or for those who weren't involved directly, or close by, to be able to put together exactly what was happening beyond the fences at Auschwitz, or the walls of the Jewish ghetto. to sacrifice that knowledge of history, or to deny our kids that knowledge because it's "too graphic" and you're "protecting them", is not only STUPID, but it's incredibly disrespectful to those who actually lived it, and who would probably say, if they hadn't been GASSED that is, that if anything good came of what happened to them, it would be that there is now KNOWLEDGE that such a thing is not only possible, but historical FACT, and because of that, IT DOES NOT HAVE TO HAPPEN AGAIN. Why should anyone want to throw that away?

Historia
In Leviticus, God tells his people to “be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy” (Leviticus 19: 2). Leviticus is a handbook of holiness. Here God prescribes the five great sacrifices that enable a sinful people to be brought into fellowship with a holy God: 1) the burnt offering; 2) the grain offering; 3) the peace offering; 4) the sin offering; and 5) the guilt offering. Four of these five are animal sacrifices.

Historia
Jimmy Lee Hickam grew up along Red Dog Road, a dead-end strip of gravel and mud buried deep in the bowels of Appalachian Ohio. It is the poorest road, in the poorest county, in the poorest region of the state. To make things worse, the name Hickam is synonymous with trouble. Jimmy Lee hails from a heathen mix of thieves, moonshiners, drunkards, and general anti-socials that for decades have clung to both the hardscrabble hills and the iron bars of every jail cell in the region. This life, Jimmy Lee believes, is his destiny, someday working with his drunkard father at the sawmill, or sitting next to his arsonist brother in the penitentiary.

Encouraging!
Revisado: 11-11-22
This book is an excellent reminder that with enough determination, and maybe one or two good friends to support you and remind you of your value now and again, it's possible for anyone to make something better for themselves. Life has opportunities for everyone. Some people's lives seem to have it's opportunities camouflaged better than others, where other people's lives are dancing with options. But they're there, no matter who you are.

But it has only vague memories of the massacre that spawned that title, and it wants to know more. Teaming up with a Research Transport vessel named ART (you don't want to know what the "A" stands for), Murderbot heads to the mining facility where it went rogue.

Perfect performance!
Revisado: 06-20-22
The way he is able to convey the understanding that murderbot is trying to pretend he doesn't really FEEL these human emotions, that he obviously does feel, is so cool. And ART is also amazingly conveyed. The perfect balance of smart, and smart ass for both characters. I LOVE these stories, and the narrator just makes them that much better.

In these classic essays, which began as talks on the BBC during World War II, Lewis creatively and simply explains the basic tenets of Christianity. Taken from the core section of Mere Christianity, this book provides an accessible way for people to discover these timeless truths. For those looking to remind themselves of what they hold true, or those looking for a snapshot of Christianity, this book is a wonderful introduction to the faith.

The man was/is a gift from God.
Revisado: 04-09-22
I'll read everything he has ever written if I get the chance to do so. I'd read his grocery list given the opportunity.
In all the wisdom he so carefully passed along, I can't help but wonder.... what would he say to me? If I'd been so blessed as to be a personal friend to him, and he had seen my life... my faults, mistakes, kindness, selfishness, regret, grief, curiosity, longing for understanding... what C. S. Lewis, would you say to me? These writings have given me an understanding of things that I longed for, and could not seem to find. I thank you, good sir. But, there is just so much in life, and so much in my mind to reason with. I wish for just an hour to speak to you, before I face my judgement, for I fear that I may still harbor unjustifiable resentment towards our father who I know is blameless for my choices. But I know that, only in my mind. As it's the heart he looks at, I'm not so confident.
