Historia
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother. As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was.

Falls short of potential
Revisado: 12-04-23
I thought the character development, especially for Bailey and Hannah, was lacking to the point of incredulity.
The story line had some potential, but unfortunately fell flat as the action was both predictable and entirely unrealistic, like a B- level Hollywood movie. The thought crossed my mind that this novel was written for the sole purpose of selling the rights to a movie producer. Perhaps that’s for the best; hopefully a movie producer would put some meat on the bones of this story, which really does have some potential.

In 1982, the nation was living in fear. One by one people in the Chicago area were dying. No one knew why — or who would be next. Law enforcement mobilized to answer the what, who and why. The what was Tylenol, laced with cyanide, placed randomly on store shelves to kill unsuspecting victims. But the who and the why? That would elude investigators for decades. If you think you know the story of the Tylenol Murders, think again. Award-winning Chicago Tribune investigative reporters Christy Gutowski and Stacy St. Clair uncover new and critical clues in law enforcement’s latest — and ...

Exceeded all expectations
Revisado: 01-05-23
Fascinating. I remember this as it was unfolding back in the 80s. There are parts I’d like to learn more about. And I think this would be a fantastic story for television: to present it in a format that younger generations would be able to understand. This would also be a great way to explain the practice and mechanisms of using terror as a weapon.
A difficult subject, very well handled.

In Indistractable, Eyal reveals the hidden psychology driving us to distraction. He describes why solving the problem is not as simple as swearing off our devices: Abstinence is impractical and often makes us want more. Eyal lays bare the secret of finally doing what you say you will do with a four-step, research-backed model. Indistractable reveals the key to getting the best out of technology, without letting it get the best of us.

There are plenty of helpful tips in this book, but unfortunately, they're sandwiched between a lot of noise. Most objectionable is the shameless placement of advertisements for "helpful" tool. There's also a certain amount of bragging going on -- like name dropping, but without saying the names out loud, although the "in" group was sure to get the reference. This book could have been mercifully shorter, *much* shorter. But I do appreciate some of the ideas, such as time blocking and involving your children in setting limits.

A Rare Bird
Revisado: 04-29-20
I've never read a story that so eloquently captures an event from so many different points of view so perfectly. I spent my career as a critical care nurse and I've experienced critical illness as a family member, both when a family member's end of life wishes were made clear to me and in the case of a severe MVA involving my 17 year old sister, which was an unpleasant surprise for the entire family.
As a nurse, I spent every hour of every working day trying to hold death at bay - even when it's clear to the health care team that we are only prolonging suffering and death. This is why health care workers often joke about having DNR tattooed across our chests. It's in large measure a result of the combination of complete lack of understanding of how medical science works and also (perhaps even more so) the unfortunate consumer model of medicine that has taken over medicine. (Also, intellectual relativism and the "democratization" of experts/truth has landed us in a new intellectual dark ages that has led to serious public health disasters and hundreds of thousands of deaths, as we try (and fail) to navigate the current covid19 pandemic, as the current administration values the economy over human life.)
The scenario of "euthanasia light" is a real one and was realistically portrayed in this story. As is the mystical component, which is not easy to describe in language. In spite of my own status as a card-carrying atheist, there are experiences that I've witnessed that have convinced me that agnosticism is the philosophically more responsible position.
I'm particularly grateful that the author read it himself. Too often Audible has narrators who sound like a computer "voice" or narrators who blow it on timing and emphasis.
Many thanks to Walter Krin for getting such complex issues so spot on; and special thanks for giving nurses a leading role, which is entirely consistent with 'in real life.' Very well done! Thank you!
We would all do well to remember that there are things worse than death.

Historia
In this 45-minute listen, a former spy introduces two simple tools for thinking. The first describes how we think. The second helps us think ahead. They are the essential tools for getting things done. The tools are applied to an incident in a subway car in Europe where a spy faces a new enemy. Then, they're reapplied to Saddam Hussein's stockpiling (or not) of weapons of mass destruction.

Historia
With its brilliant and brutal portrayal of the Corleone family, The Godfather burned its way into our national consciousness. This unforgettable saga of crime and corruption, passion and loyalty continues to stand the test of time, as the definitive novel of the Mafia underworld. A #1 New York Times bestseller in 1969, Mario Puzo's epic was turned into the incomparable film of the same name, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It is the original classic that has been often imitated, but never matched.

I made the right choice with this recording over the one featuring a full cast. The cast reading is far too WASP-y. This is perfect.

We still read this book for a reason. It's been about thirty years since I last read this, and I'm so pleased i re read it. You really appreciate this novel so much more if you're familiar with the history. The reader for this audio book version was excellent. A good reader makes all the difference in the world.

A better writer.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Anything but this.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Karen Peakes?
Never.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Shame. Disgust. Nausea.
Any additional comments?
To be fair, I couldn't bring myself to listen for even a full hour. Who reads this crap?

Tyler Anbinder's story is one of innovators and artists, revolutionaries and rioters, staggering deprivation and soaring triumphs, all playing out against the powerful backdrop of New York City, at once ever changing and profoundly, permanently itself. City of Dreams provides a vivid sense of what New York looked like, sounded like, smelled like, and felt like over the centuries of its development and maturation into the city we know today.

The reader reads this book so fast that he is impossible to understand. I would return it but I'm not sure if I can. The book seems very promising, but I suppose if I want to read it, I will have to buy a print copy (which I am unlikely to do, since I've already paid for it once).

Steve Osborne has seen a thing or two in his 20 years in the NYPD - some harmless things, some definitely not. In "Stakeout" Steve and his partner mistake a Manhattan dentist for an armed robbery suspect and reduce the man down to a puddle of snot and tears when questioning him. In "Mug Shot" the mother of a suspected criminal makes a strange request and provides a sobering reminder of the humanity at stake in his profession.

Great stories!
Revisado: 01-30-17
This collection of authentic, riveting stories has the one thing that we hope for more than any other quality in NYC's finest: toughness combined with a huge heart. Everyone who loves NYC will love this book. It is both funny and compassionate, gritty and gentle, and the author clearly does the job for all the right reasons: he loves New York and he loves being "on the job." This book was so refreshing, especially as our country makes a heartbreaking turn towards becoming a dreaded, repressive police state.
I strongly recommend listening to this book on Audible. Listening to these stories told by the author in his irresistible New York accent adds a layer of quality to the stories that would be a shame to miss. For those of us who have lost faith in the police, this book serves as a bridge that connects us through our shared humanity. This is perhaps my favorite Audible title so far. Highly recommended!
