Historia
Twelve-year-old Porter would much rather spend his weekends playing soccer than channeling spirits in the parallel universe of Pericael. Unfortunately for him, Porter's family has guarded the gate between Earth and monster-filled Pericael for generations, so he's not getting out of Gatekeeper lessons anytime soon.

Loved it more than expected! A true gem!
Revisado: 05-12-21
I had heard a few good reviews about this book from friends who suggested I listen to it, so I did, expecting it to be a typical YA fantasy book. However, I did not expect the beautiful world-building and depth of characters that greeted me in Pericael! Every detail and brush stroke of this new world fit together like pieces of a puzzle, creating a gorgeous picture of a place I want to visit (mortal danger and all). The magic wielded by Porter, the young gatekeeper, is built on both academics and artistry, and is certainly not for the faint of heart. This story of another land, however, is for anyone who wants to add fresh magic to their imagination.

Historia
Twelve-year old Caleb Wallace has spent his summer at Autumn Springs, coaxing his papa out of his room when he's grumpy, attempting to gain the affections of a certain nurse, and pulling himself together when his grandpa looks right into him with nothing but a dull stare. Seems the only thing that puts a light in Papa Clem's eyes is a family heirloom - an old folktale involving Robert Johnson's harmonica down in Arkansas. Caleb is happy to listen; two things Papa Clem can still do well are tell a story and play the blues.

A surprising gem of a book!
Revisado: 02-02-21
I expected Runaway Blues to be a typical young adult novel, but I was surprised by the depth and realism in this book. I've had family members who struggled with dementia, and the thoughts and feelings of Caleb as he deals with his grandpa strike a chord. And speaking of chords... I was wonderfully surprised by the poetic description of music and the way it moves a person. The narrator was also a perfect choice for this book, equally able to convey the conflicted emotions of a 12-year-old boy as well as his gruff grandfather, whether talking of memories or singing the blues.

Historia
Stag Maguire, a burnt-out journalist , agrees to help a friend move. They find an urgent message - HELP ME - written on a piece of silk tacked behind a long-forgotten portrait. The message from an address in Berlin is urgent, though it had to have been written pre-World War II. Curious, Stag and his friend trace it to an apartment, a sealed time capsule that has not been lived in since 1942. And from one phone call, the men unleash a nefarious plot and brutal security forces long thought vanquished. Stag finds himself pitted against a vestige of the Third Reich....

Thought-provoking and exciting!

This book was outside of my normal genres, but I am glad I branched out! A thriller with a historical, captivating storyline that builds a bridge between past and present.
