This is my favorite so far in the Planetfall series. Each protagonist has struggled with mental illness stemming from past trauma. I found this character’s response very relatable. I felt the world building layering in a way that was more satisfying than the jump from Planetfall to After Atlas. I also appreciate the Thriller style mystery (similar to Atlas) more than the murder mystery of After Atlas. The world that has been built is a grim one and the emotional impact of the denouement had me in tears for the characters and concerned for our society. Between the mental health struggles and anxiety provoking themes, I this is not a feel good book. Kudos for a book that I could feel so deeply.

I thought this would be a sequel to planet fall, but it is a separate story in the same universe. I can imagine that the stories will eventually be woven together, but I wonder how many other books will need to be read before that happens.

I like the character development and pacing of the backstory reveal. It feels like a psychological thriller with a sci-fi setting. I enjoy series, so I don’t mind having incomplete storylines and unanswered questions at the end of a book. However, it feels like this book ends mid-climax.

The narration is as polished as other professionally narrated books and it is nice to know that and pronunciation, inflection choices etc reflect the author’s perspective.

Edit: coming back after reading the next 2 books in the series: I am enjoying this series. The next 2 books will not address the cliff hanger from Planetfall. However I sense a deep commitment to world building and think we’ll get back to addressing the cliff hanger.

I read this in grade school and loved it. I spent a little while tracking this down because I didn’t remember the title. It’s a enjoyable story.

Story telling: I love the richness of the world that is created. The detail and science is usually written in a way to enhance the characters and plot. However, it is sometimes far out enough to remind me that I am listening to an Andy Weir novel. The plot evokes concerns about present day Earth. So it isn’t as much an escapist joy as The Martian. I enjoyed this more than Artemis.
Performance: As soon as the narrator (Ray Porter) said “Eridani” it reminded me of the Bobiverse books (same narrator, also has space exploration). I love that series, so it’s not a problem. Still I kept thinking “Delta Eridani” and “Baaaaahb”.

The 2nd book left me feeling annoyed at the characters and romantic tropes. The action sequences felt gratuitous and too long in the last one. This felt more balanced. The action moved the plot along. Kira is no longer a child with an creepy old man after her. The work building and back stories also starting to pay off. I’m looking forward to the next one.

YA sci-fi, a great book for driving or doing chores. I’ll definitely be listening to the next book in the series.

This novel has very detailed story telling and world building. Normally interest in plot is what keeps me listening, but I think it’s just written in a very compelling way. I’m downloading the second book as soon as I finished the first.

I really wanted to like this more. It starts of well, creating an interesting world and framing an interesting mystery to untangle. Then it spends the better part of the second half on a stomach turning cliched romance where a powerful man dominates a woman and she loves him for it. Having a “stubborn” woman say, “I’m independent!” doesn’t make the character actually independent.

I listened to this book based on a recommendation. It has a good premise, but it isn't executed well.

The book is milking pop culture references to grow its fan base or maybe it's just bad writing. Many of the "pop culture references" read like buzz-feed top 10 lists instead of true appreciation for the original works. I don't have the background to tell if the video game references are as sloppy as the movie and music ones. But they don't fee gratuitous and they feel well researched. The writing generally reads a bit immature.

From a plot perspective, the book never deals with the implications of its dystopian setting. The love story feeds into horrible adolescent perceptions of "romance". The virtual reality universe and the conflict with the sixes are the strongest elements.
