Historia
1547: Pedro Gonsalvus, a young boy living on the island of Tenerife, understands that he is different from the other children in his village. He is mercilessly ridiculed for the shiny layer of hair covering his body from head to toe. When he is kidnapped off the beach near his home, he finds himself delivered by a slave broker into the dangerous and glamorous world of France’s royal court. There “Monsieur Sauvage,” as he is known, learns French, literature, and sword fighting, becoming an attendant to the French King Henri II and a particular favorite of his queen.

Ear Candy
Revisado: 12-02-24
Prose, rich as poetry, images real enough to touch or smell, emotions soar, swim seaweed strewn depths or crawl, bloody kneed, across polished marble floors sparkling with shards and miniscule fragments of mouth blown crystal stemwear.
An unusual, lonely boy lands in a rarefied world where he must swallow his masculine pride to survive. His boyhood friend and their patron, drive plot revealing secrets.
His beautiful wife, a coddled only daughter of wealth, finds herself bartered to a stranger beast. They reside, captive in castles.
A whole new more historic take on an all too familiar tale but this time from the inside of two tenacious lovers. Their hopes, fears, acute mental gymnastics and perceptions of depth and complexity banter back and forth as the story staggers around in time.
Well worth the listen.
Spoiler alert, have tissues handy.

I was pleased that this second book in the series is better written and contains many moments of laugh out loud humor. The characters are becoming more three dimensional. Some of the battle scenes are still over the top but the action is more engaging.

Historia
In lyric, accessible prose, Carlo Rovelli invites us to consider questions about the nature of time that continue to puzzle physicists and philosophers alike. For most listeners, this is unfamiliar terrain. We all experience time, but the more scientists learn about it, the more mysterious it appears. We think of it as uniform and universal, moving steadily from past to future, measured by clocks. Rovelli tears down these assumptions one by one, revealing a strange universe where, at the most fundamental level, time disappears.

I am not sure what to say.
Revisado: 03-02-24
Not being a physicist, the constant repetition on the word entropy did not convince me of the premise that time does not exist. The idea of relative local time was clear and made sense. Yet I was taught that eternity existed and it was the realm of God as the ground of all being. There is no where, where God is not. There is no when, when God does not exist. God knows everything, everywhere, all the time. Free will is not a conundrum for me because as a human I have been endowed with the gift of choice in my thoughts, speech and actions. The vast mind of God knows every nuance of the possibilities I ponder and infinite variants I am not capable of conceiving. As a child I learned that God does not have to travel forward and backwards through time like Angels. Nor does God have to plod ever forward through time like people. God’s existence is omnipresent.
I never bought into the notion of the Big Bang. Why? As a child I immediately asked; what existed before that? What shocked my family was my six year old insistance that when I grew up I wanted to be a blood cell in the body of God.
My impression of dark matter/energy is that these mysteries are simply what exists at the opposite ends of the current electromagnetic spectrum beyond our current capacity to visualize or understand. Infrared heats black top asphalt and it heats air above it so we can see ripples in the atmosphere and infer the causal effects of sunlight. I believe in time we will discover how to create instruments like the electron microscope which will fundamentally enrich and expand our comprehension of the multiverse and our place and role in it, however humble or pivotal our role might be.
Let’s hope we tackle our planetary problems like global warming and protection of our nonhuman allies with alacrity, survive and usher in new levels of awareness and efficacy. That may be a golden age.

Historia
In 1963, a female student was attending a lecture given by Nobel Prize winner James Watson, then tenured at Harvard. At nineteen, she was struggling to define her future. She had given herself just ten years to fulfill her professional ambitions before starting the family she was expected to have. For women at that time, a future on the usual path of academic science was unimaginable—but during that lecture, young Nancy Hopkins fell in love with the promise of genetics. Confidently believing science to be a pure meritocracy, she embarked on a career.

Up Hill Battle For Women In Science
Revisado: 02-03-24
The book is scholarly, precise and competently covers complex woman’s issues. I do have one critique; I wish the tome had been aggressively edited. Much like the movie; “Run Lola Run” the book recaps important information from various perspectives. This may provide insights but I found the redundancy annoying. I also could have done without some of the minutiae.
That being said, I think it is a powerful book and much needed now that SCOTUS has overturned Roe V Wade, once more subjugating women to a predetermined biological role. Fertility is not the definition or value of any woman. Gestating, birthing and raising children is a human right and each individual woman’s personal choice. No politician or agent of any state has higher authority over a woman’s reproduction than that woman herself. Any and all questions regarding pregnancy are between the woman, her chosen partner and her physician, period.
Rape and incest are felonious assaults and need to be punished as such. Any pregnancy incurred by force, seductive intoxication, trafficking or deceit by a partner should be terminated as soon as possible at the first request of the sexual assault victim.
To those anti-abortion advocates screaming “Pro Life” while they veto Food, clothing, housing, child care, healthcare and education; You need to face the fact that Unwanted Babies become abused, battered or neglected children, who suffer physical and psychological problems in consequence and are apt to become violent, antisocial adults.
Being 71, having collected coins for Bill Bared’s legal fees, needing ‘The Janes’ desperately in 1970, I am dismayed beyond words about recent right wing encroachments on American Women’s bodily autonomy! Women are People!
Women are entitled to inalienable Human Rights. That I now need to reiterate this fact in 2024 is astounding!
Hopefully young women will listen to this epic recounting of women’s struggle for equity and become motivated, like we were, to leave a more just planet to our daughters.

Following the enormous success of 2004 bestseller and critics' favorite Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, Susanna Clarke delivers a delicious collection of ten stories set in the same fairy-crossed world of 19th-century England. With Clarke's characteristic historical detail and diction, these dark, enchanting tales unfold in a slightly distorted version of our own world, where people are bedeviled by mischievous interventions from the fairies.

Old Tales
Revisado: 01-28-24
Being from the USA, I think I missed some important connections and became befuddled by antiquated words. The cast system, so readily displayed distressed me. The sexiest dismal of women was offensive but probably more accurate than apocryphal. The odd admixture of Christianity and social striving opposing magic made the characters seem farcical. I doubt modern children would relate to passages in which objects and crafts of long bygone eras abound yet the plots are definitely meant as teaching tales for young readers. I am not clear about who the intended audience is, British history buffs perhaps?

Piranesi lives in the House. Perhaps he always has. In his notebooks, day after day, he makes a clear and careful record of its wonders: the labyrinth of halls, the thousands upon thousands of statues, the tides that thunder up staircases, the clouds that move in slow procession through the upper halls. On Tuesdays and Fridays Piranesi sees his friend, the Other. At other times he brings tributes of food to the Dead. But mostly, he is alone.

There may be no tidy solutions or pithy answers to life’s big challenges, but Michelle Obama believes that we can all locate and lean on a set of tools to help us better navigate change and remain steady within flux. In The Light We Carry, she opens a frank and honest dialogue with listeners, considering the questions many of us wrestle with: How do we build enduring and honest relationships? How can we discover strength and community inside our differences? What tools do we use to address feelings of self-doubt or helplessness? What do we do when it all starts to feel like too much?

I found this audiobook inspiring and reassuring in this election year. I cannot wrap my head around Americans preferring Putin type rhetoric from a proven conman over the compassionate Democracy of Joe Biden and the vigor and eloquent feminism of Vice President Kamala Harris.

March 2022 wrinkle revisited
Revisado: 03-01-22
With the Russian attack on Ukraine this past week and Putin threatening the world with nuclear war, I needed an escape from the images of bombed buildings, weeping people and their impossibly brave president and his loyal patriots.
I chose a book I remembered loving as a teenager. My subconscious mind is far more tuned in to what is important than my overwhelmed heart. What a wake up call about the preciousness of Democracy and freedom. It warmed my soul to hear once again that Love and Courage still are the only tools capable of counteracting the lust for power and domination. But love strong enough to die for is a huge ask anytime anywhere, yet there they stand in the breach as fragile and vulnerable as children and as brave as any hero who ever lived.
Ukraine this story, written so long ago is about steadfast love of home, family and autonomy. My prayers are with you and if you need to read a story which reflects your current crisis, may you find solace in this tale.
