As An Adult
Revisado: 12-05-23
The older I get, the more I appreciate the later books in this series. Since I was young, my favorites were always Azkaban and the Goblet, and I think they still are but five and six never really did it for me until I got older. Now, almost 35, they hit in a different way. Harry can be so frustrating with his teenage moodiness and inability to not only connect certain dots but the inability to turn to people much wiser than himself regarding certain issues he has to deal with, but I can also appreciate more those same downfalls as the plight of youth and being strong willed. It's nice to see how personal growth in life makes you see a book in a different light and the older I get, the more I love this book. The performance of Jim Dale also really pushes these stories along

Instant classic
Revisado: 11-29-23
This book was an instant classic before it even came out, and here we are two decades later and it is still holding that title strong. One of the best books in the HP saga. Such good imagery and imagination, great details that tie the story together perfect in the end.

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

A Powerful voice, a beautiful story
Revisado: 08-09-22
Wow. The story is magnificent. Such colorful language. The narrator (in the book) is instantly my favorite perspective from which I've ever read a story. The author could've easily went in a very dark direction with the narrator, and managed to keep it very light-hearted and full of happy moments, despite every single aspect of this work calling out to be a very sad and dark tale. He maintains the perfect balance between dark and light, good and bad, happy and sad. I regret not reading this sooner, and I have to say it's even inspired me to write again. The actual voice of the audiobook, was a good choice as well, I enjoyed the narration, who got the language just right and acted the parts very well.

Absolutely Essential
Revisado: 09-29-21
A most damning, but historically factual and accurate in depth lens into the lives of the two most consequential figures in modern US history, who left Americans with an agency that put the Stasi and KGB in position to almost be the heroes, as it pertains to nefarious state organs. Americans unaware and unaccustomed to this shade of American history will be utterly heartbroken by these accounts, but confronting the truth is the hardest intellectual undertaking in the 21st century, and we are all much better for it.

Historia
In 1965, the US government helped the Indonesian military kill approximately one million innocent civilians. This was one of the most important turning points of the 20th century, eliminating the largest communist party outside China and the Soviet Union and inspiring copycat terror programs in faraway countries like Brazil and Chile. But these events remain widely overlooked, precisely because the CIA's secret interventions were so successful.

Impressive, and even more important.
Revisado: 05-25-21
Thoroughly documented, Bevins has provided an invaluable testament to the utter savagery and destruction that was implemented globally by the US and its client regimes behind a red, blood soaked mask of 'anti communism'. The more we dig into the history between 1910-1990, the more apparent it becomes that the "death toll of communism" is not only a pathetic fabrication of "the victors who wrote the history books" but additionally a tally of millions that they truly do not want to start comparing. I will never blindly support the crimes of dictators posing as socialist saviors, but I will also not go to my grave blindly blaming them for the crimes of attempting to hold together states being pummeled daily from the outside by the US and its actors, physically, economically and psychologically. It's rather convenient that the crimes of socialist regimes have always been taught so thoroughly and exaggeratedly while almost never even speaking of the criminal actions by western Capitalist nations, to the point where one is almost tempted to entirely disregard those accusations; but with writers like Bevins, we don't have to do that, and can continue into the future with well documented accounts of exactly what crimes we can look back on to try to guide us into a more humanitarian focus on the actions we take to develop our own path.

In each of his books, James Bradley has exposed the hidden truths behind America's engagement in Asia. Now comes his most engrossing work yet. Beginning in the 1850s, Bradley introduces us to the prominent Americans who made their fortunes in the China opium trade. As they - good Christians all - profitably addicted millions, American missionaries arrived, promising salvation for those who adopted Western ways.

This is the kind of history that, although never provided, Americans and the West in general would require to understand the modern history of Asia, and specifically China and the US. So much is missed in our history classes that seems likely to be intentional. Will recommend this to everyone

We live in a moment when the greatest act of love is to stay distant from the object of your affection. When governments renowned for ruthless cuts in public spending can suddenly conjure up trillions. When toilet paper becomes a commodity as precious as diamonds. And when, according to Slavoj Žižek, a new form of communism - the outlines of which can already be seen in the very heartlands of neoliberalism - may be the only way of averting a descent into global barbarism.

Perceptive, and great for those new to Zizek
Revisado: 04-09-21
Being a work centered more in the general philosophy and analysis of our current experiences in the Covid era, rather than a deep, surgical incision into a philosophical concept, these works make Zizek much more available and readable for the uninitiated. As always, a highly perceptive collection of insights into the current social and psychological landscape and hurdles imposed by not only Covid, but the impending crises we face and the inability of modern capital and social structures to deal with them in any way short of catastrophic and murderously negligent. Glad to see Zizek putting out books for current topics and opening himself more to the public, along with the insights and concepts of psychoanalysis and philosophy.

As good as any praise
Revisado: 07-31-20
I've been recommended this book for two decades and put off reading it, I tend to make myself wait to read these kind of stories, knowing internally l inherently I'll be more sad when it's over than not having read it. The story was more than worth the wait. The language, the use of foreign vocabulary to signify a people of many past cultures combined, the imagery, it was all written in a highly engaging manner. The production of the story into audio was also nothing less than great, with many voices for different characters, doing them justice.

Per usual, from King, a fantastic story of the evil magician, Flag, attempting to bend the universe to his evil will. This is a great read especially for those who are fans of the Dark Tower or the Stand. I'd recommend it to anyone who loves a bit of fantasy or medieval storytelling.
