Just days after an astonishing ascent to Grandmaster Alchemist, Ruwen finds himself embroiled in a contest of mythical proportions. Invited by the enigmatic Nine Muses, Ruwen and a cohort of alchemists from the Black Pyramid journey to a mysterious location where the boundaries between the Shadow Realm and the Material Realm dangerously blur. This is a game-changer.
Revisado: 07-27-24
You know, I followed the entire book on Patreon and already knew what to expect, but it was thoroughly enjoyable listening to it all at once with Travis Baldree's performance. The Tenth Muse is now among my top favorites in the series. Although they are all very enjoyable, if I had to pick my absolute favorites, it would be a hard choice between The Sixth Rune, The Tenth Muse, and The Seventh Step. The Sixth Rune and the Seventh Step because that's when I really think Ruwen came into his own; demonstrating his growth in mind-buggling ways. Then the Tenth Muse because it just flip-over the game board. Just great story-telling. Thank you so much for writing this series.

In the Void beyond Aster Fall, Sam stands watch at the fortress of Silverguard, protecting the world from an ancient enemy. His strength as an Astral Titan is all that stands between it and destruction. Meanwhile, dimensional cracks are spreading through the World Seal, the barrier that protects Aster Fall from invasion by the Outsider galaxy. Flaws are appearing with increasing frequency as demonic armies flood through, including old enemies from the First War. If the seal fails completely, Aster Fall will break and disaster will follow.

Smooth continuation of story
Revisado: 05-17-24
This continues the story very well and hits many great high points. The mc continues to get stronger and accomplish wonders for Asterfall. I can’t wait to listen to the next installment.

Starts out slow, but ends strongly
Revisado: 04-13-22
So, it's like the author deluges you in negative emotions for the first 3rd of the book. But if you make it through that, then you are likely to enjoy the book. That first third, though, is a doozy.
In my opinion, the story doesn't really begin until the main character gets exiled. You will see when you read it. Good reading!

**See author's note on adult content below.** From the dark depths of the past, comes the tale of the first wizard of Illeniel. Daniel Tennick lived simply, a young shepherd with few troubles and little to occupy his mind, until the warden appeared. Daniel's power awakens, and he finds himself hunted by the servants of the cruel and uncaring forest gods. Trapped by his gift, Daniel will uncover the secrets of the deep woods and those who live there, a civilization created from the grave of an older one.

Excellent continuation of the Illeniel story
Revisado: 04-07-15
I really enjoyed this book - I especially liked how Manning went back to the past to tell about the origins of the Illeniels without losing any of the characters from the previous installments and keeping these "present" characters involved in a believable, realistic and meaningful way.
It was thoroughly enjoyable. I look forward to the next installment.

This one is very much fun!
Revisado: 12-14-14
This book is just honest to goodness fun.
It reminds me of such fun and delicious - can you say delicious when it's a book? - books as "Old Man's War," and "Ready Player One," Its the story of a guy who discovers an interesting thing about our world and exploit it to his everlasting happiness, joy, and a kind of paradise - it is escapism at its most fun. You lose yourself for a few delightful hours in a mixture of technology and magic(?) or is it simply just technology and more technology? Anyway, you lose yourself in wonderful imaginings. Then, unfortunately, you have to wake up and wait for the next installment!

Loved it
Revisado: 12-14-14
I loved this series.
Young man awakening to his powers without a teacher. Finds various learning opportunities along the way, coming to discover he is probably the most powerful person of his kind ever born (although not put in those words, that's what's implied). Then tragedy strikes at the very end of the series - or so it seems; I wonder what the next installment will reveal?

Not a bad read at all!!
Revisado: 12-14-14
So, I read the reviews to this book before getting it.
I found that, contrary to a lot of reviewers, I enjoyed the whole series very much. It's a story of a hero passing on his prowess to the next generation after some dubious doings. Mean while the new hero to be is gradually growing to fill a role the reader/listener is made anxious to see define. Not bad at all for entertainment value. Not a waste of a credit, either.

Entertaining series
Revisado: 12-14-14
So this series is quite entertaining - but, it left me vaguely unsatisfied.
This is another author that gave his main character phenomenal powers and then held him back. It just makes you go: "what a missed opportunity!"
In all though, it is enjoyable.

Ok but not great
Revisado: 12-14-14
I thought that this series had a whole lot of steam at the beginning. It was very fun to listen to and the character was growing, learning etc.
She is still kind of doing that, but it just doesn't seem as interesting as it did at the start.
So, this book isn't a waste of a credit, but I cannot say it is as interesting as the first few books in the series.
I would say it is an example of a series that, though quite tenacious, hasn't kept it's steam - Please don't get me wrong - I love this author and his books; it is just my feeling about the series as it now is. I hope something will happen to make the books feel like they did at the start.
Of course find out what others think before you decide. The above is just my opinion.

Historia
The Galactics arrived with their Battle fleet in 2052. Rather than being exterminated under a barrage of hell-burners, Earth joined a vast Empire that spanned the Milky Way. Our only worthwhile trade goods are our infamous mercenary legions, elite troops we sell to the highest alien bidder. In the third book in the series, James McGill is deployed on another alien world. His third interstellar tour is different in every way. Rather than meeting up with a primitive society, this time he’s headed to an advanced world.

You may actually love this book
Revisado: 12-14-14
So, after reading books 1 and 2 in the series, I almost did not read this third book in the series.
This was mostly due to the reviews of this book. It took me quite a while to decide to read it. But I'm not sorry that I did read it.
It is quite true that this book may not be for you due to the setting of the story. I, on the other hand, found the setting not too different from the setting of the other two books. In a lot of ways, I enjoyed this setting more than the other ones.
So, if some of the reviews have discouraged you, keep in mind that you may actually be delightfully surprised!
