Historia
A powerful work of reportage and American history that braids the story of the forced removal of Native Americans onto treaty lands in the nation’s earliest days, and a small-town murder in the 1990s that led to a Supreme Court ruling reaffirming Native rights to that land more than a century later.

A Must-Read
Revisado: 03-16-25
You can tell from the outset this book was written with a deep care for truth. The author did a fantastic job of providing a rich context for the Murphy decision. I especially appreciate that the book was not just a cut and dry analysis, but an amalgam of human stories.

Historia
In her New York Times best seller White Rage, Carol Anderson laid bare an insidious history of policies that have systematically impeded black progress in America, from 1865 to our combustible present. With One Person, No Vote, she chronicles a related history: the rollbacks to African American participation in the vote since the 2013 Supreme Court decision that eviscerated the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Known as the Shelby ruling, this decision effectively allowed districts with a demonstrated history of racial discrimination to change voting requirements without approval from the Department of Justice.

The narrator struggles to say "disenfranchise"
Revisado: 03-05-25
The information is great and well laid out. Unfortunately, the narrator cannot pronounce the key word which is the subject of the book. She said "disenfranchised" correctly only once. It was very distracting as she also struggled with pronunciation of several other words and names. I recommend reading this book with your eyes rather than your ears.

Historia
Laid off from her department store job, Carmen has perilously little cash and few options. The prospect of spending Christmas with her perfect sister Sofia, in Sofia’s perfect house with her perfect children and her perfectly ordered yuppie life, does not appeal. Frankly, Sofia doesn’t exactly want her prickly sister Carmen there, either. But Sofia has yet another baby on the way, a mother desperate to see her daughters get along, and a client who needs help revitalizing his shabby old bookshop. So Carmen moves in and takes the job.

Not my favorite narrator
Revisado: 01-09-25
The story is entertaining, but the narrator is a bit grating. It's almost worth reading the physical book instead, if you have time.

Everyone should read this book.
Revisado: 06-10-20
Kendi does a beautiful job of creating a space where readers can face our own history of racist thoughts through his personal admissions. His exploration of intersectional racism emphasizes the need to ensure all are represented by anti-racist policies, and he shows how it is up to each of us to make conscious effort to be anti-racist in both word and deed. I truly appreciated his passionate crescendo as the book progressed. It's a book I will certainly revisit over the years.
