Historia
Vladimir Putin is the world’s most dangerous man. Alone among world leaders, he has the power to reduce the United States and Europe to ashes in a nuclear firestorm and has threatened to do so. He invades his neighbors, most recently Ukraine, meddles in western elections, and orders assassinations inside and outside Russia. His regime is autocratic and deeply corrupt. But that is only half the story. Unflinching, hard-hitting, and objective, Philip Short’s biography gives us the whole tale, up to the present day.

Well done with one flaw
Revisado: 08-11-24
This is a significant biography of probably the most important statesman of our age, Russia's president Putin.
The author does well avoiding most opportunities for open bias throughout discussion of Putin's youth and rise to power. But the closer the narrative got to the present, the more biases began popping in. On topics of Covid and the Ukraine, among others, the author injects his bias in favor of the neo-liberal establishment's position. if he could have left that out it would have been an even more improvessive work.

Historia
David Ignatius is known for his uncanny ability, in novel after novel, to predict the next great national security headline. In Phantom Orbit, he presents a story both searing and topical, with stakes as far-reaching as outer space. It follows Ivan Volkov, a Russian student in Beijing, who discovers an unsolved puzzle in the writings of the seventeenth-century astronomer Johannes Kepler. He takes the puzzle to a senior scientist in the Chinese space program and declares his intention to solve it.

Not that Good and Full of Politics
Revisado: 06-22-24
The author pushes his politics throughout the story. if you are a neoliberal hawk this will likely excite you. It checks all the boxes for them. It is pro-Deep State, anti-Russia, anti-China, pro-Ukraine and pro-war. It is like NBC News wrote the story. lol Naturally, I can't stand neoliberal warmongers. So, for me, the story wasn't very good. But I'm sure about half of this country would love it.

Historia
Heaven and Hell takes you on a journey through Heaven and Hell, as viewed through the eyes of Chris and Serena Davis, who come to experience their reality first hand. Through God's mercy, those who dwell in Heaven, have no recollection of loved ones in Hell. At least, most don't. Yet, in the most beautiful place in the universe, one man's troubling dreams lead him to realize that the love of his Earth life has been condemned to Satan's realm.

Entertaining & Emotional But...
Revisado: 05-30-23
The story is compelling and gives an interesting description of the horrors of hell and wonders of heaven. Unfortunately, it also mixes in some confused theology on the Trinity. The writer depicts Jesus as a creation of God the Father rather than an eternal person of the Trinity, equal to the Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus is depicted as not all knowing or all powerful. Needless to say, this is not a Biblical or traditional view of the Trinity. We are told in John 1:1: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
Despite this problem, the story is still worth listening to. I do wish a professional narrator had been used to read it though.

Then: First Lieutenant Sean Elliott and nine other mixed-service US soldiers on a convoy in Afghanistan suddenly found themselves and their MRAP vehicle thrown back to Earth’s Paleolithic Age. And they were not alone. Displaced Romans, Neolithic Europeans, and more showed up as well. Some would be allies. Some became deadly foes. Now: Scientists from an almost unimaginably far future need the survivors’ advice and support to reconnoiter and ultimately recover other groups displaced in time.

I have enjoyed these books for the most part. This last one had a graphic and unnecessary interracial sex scene that was disgusting. Except for that and the heavy focus on sex I enjoyed the story.

Perfect Blend of SciFi & Rural Southern
Revisado: 09-24-22
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The narrator was perfect for the story. The Sci Fi aspects of the story were interesting. And the rural Southern aspect of the story was captivating and so well done. As someone who grew up and lives in the rural South I found that it is one of those rare books about the South that doesn't try to push an agenda or patronize readers.

Rubbish
Revisado: 09-17-22
I went into this with an open mind. But even fantasy has to have some symblance of plausibility to it. This story was awful and when it tied into super heroes it just lost me completely. I am going to return it. the production was good. The story was just awful.

Historia
“The Heron” is the nickname a big-city accountant has attached to himself in his new home near San Diego, where he’s using the alias to avoid a hit man who may be after him. It seems a former client believes that The Heron has skipped town with several million dollars not his own. Don Winslow’s ensuing, entertaining yarn is by turns twisty, dark, and comical as we observe the delicate dance between the pursuer and the pursued.

Depressing
Revisado: 04-03-22
Not sure what I was looking for in this book but what I found was a well written but depressing book about an alien place to me - NYC. The author beats the reader over the head with the race issue while describing a place I would never want to live or even visit. The reader can sympathize with the main character, but he is still a terrible, corrupt man caught up in a corrupt system in an alien city of violence, anger, despair and faithlessness. Ulimately, I came away wishing the main character had never been born and that this awful Gotham had never been built.
