Carr gets better and better
Revisado: 09-25-24
I’ve read an greatly enjoyed all of Carr’s books. This is his best yet. Gripping story. Many homages to other great writers. Plenty of plot twists. And Ray Porters performance is superb as always.
Looking forward to the next Jack Carr novel

Historia
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return, and where the choreography of the world’s end requires massive decisions made on seconds’ notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have. Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen’s Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario.

Superb, chilling, a must read for everyone
Revisado: 07-24-24
I've read or listened to almost all of Annie Jacobsen's work. She's a detail-oriented investigative journalist who also knows how to write a book that's hard to put down. This may be her best and most important work. It's compelling, chilling, even frightening. If, after listening to or reading this book, you do not have grave concerns about the chance of nuclear war, and the horrors that follow, you need to take a good look in the mirror.

Historia
The first in-depth look at Lance Armstrong's doping scandal, the phenomenal business success built on the back of fraud, and the greatest conspiracy in the history of sports. Lance Armstrong won a record-smashing seven Tours de France after staring down cancer, and in the process became an international symbol of resilience and courage. In a sport constantly dogged by blood-doping scandals, he seemed above the fray. Then, in January 2013, the legend imploded. He admitted doping during the Tours and, in an interview with Oprah, described his "mythic, perfect story" as "one big lie."

Well researched, poorly narrated
Revisado: 01-25-24
The authors did a good job of compiling a huge amount of research. This was offset by clumsy narration. The narrator continually mispronounced names, places and other words. Often using several different mispronunciations for the same word. It became very annoying and distracting.

Historia
Here is an explosive book that takes us, for the first time, deep inside a shadowy, fascinating, and surreal world of unscrupulous doctors, anything-goes team directors, and athletes so relentlessly driven to succeed that they would do anything—and take any risk, physical, mental, or moral—to gain the edge they needed to win. The Secret Race is a riveting, courageous act of witness from a man who is as determined to reveal the hard truth about his sport as he once was to win the Tour de France.

The truth, the whole truth
Revisado: 01-09-24
Tyler is brutally honest about his time in racing and what he and others did to gain advantage by doping. He’s also honest about Armstrong and doesn’t seem to hold any ill will toward him. Taken in context, this book was published before Armstrong was stripped of all his tdf titles, it’s a fascinating look into the life behind bars that professional cyclists have.

Historia
Sir Jackie Stewart is a man of immense charisma and integrity and is one of the most highly regarded names in global sport: winner of three F1 World Championships, 27 Grands Prix, and ranked in the top five drivers of all time. On retiring from the circuit, he went on to build an equally impressive international business career. In the 1960s and into the 70s, with his black cap, sideburns, and aviator shades, Jackie Stewart was an unmistakable icon in a glorious era of style, glamour, and speed.

Five stars all the way around.
Revisado: 11-13-23
Sir Jackie, in his typical modest way, takes the listener through a great, but all too brief journey through his life. I was hanging on every word. My Conley complaint is that I could have listened to a hundred hours of Jackie talking g about his life and experiences in racing and business. That of course is too much to ask for. But I’m very glad I bought this.

Stellar! Powerful! Perhaps Carr’s best work yet
Revisado: 05-26-23
This book starts by laying the groundwork for a complex story. It’s not dull, but it does require the listener to pay attention. That quickly turns into a well laid out “novel” with plenty of twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat. There is a lot of historical context in the book. Things you may or may not have heard of. The most powerful part may be at the end in the authors notes. Carr reveals much of the sources he used to research for the book. And when you realize how true the contents of Only The Dead are, it may leave you with a chill running down your spine.
Kudos to Jack Carr for an incredibly well researched and written book. I’ve read/listened to all his work - and this was above and beyond my high expectations I had for it. And, as usual, Ray Porter shows that he is perhaps the best performer of audio books in the English speaking world. Thank you Mr Porter.

A boring, narcissistic cry for attention
Revisado: 12-23-22
I should request a refund. This is by far the worst book I’ve gotten on audible. It’s the story of a self absorbed and spiked punk who thinks he’s a badass because he spent a month with David Goggins doing some workouts. I’ve read Goggins books. And it sounds da like he went really easy on Itzler.
Don’t waste your time or money on this book of exaggerated tall tales. It’s a long cry for attention by Itzler. Save your money. Don’t give it to him.

When his beautiful ex-wife, Savannah, shows up out of the blue to tell him that her husband has been murdered in Los Angeles, Logan is quietly pleased. Savannah’s late husband, after all, is Arlo Echevarria, the man she left Logan for.
