Painfully powerful Tale.

Incomprehensible, over-the-top melodrama!

One of the 3 worst books ever!!
The children are one dimensional greedy, contentious brats who defy every single thing the mother asks, even when under siege in a war zone.
The mother is continually waffling, making one decision & doing the opposite in the next paragraph without warning or explanation. For example, when she is told to go to the morgue to check to see if her son is there, she pushes back and says why would I want to go there! Then, the next thing she does is go to the morgue. This sort of thing happens over and over again.
Inexplicable things happen regularly. Where did grandad go? How are there food shortages, yet people sit eating at outdoor cafes? How is it that phones work and stay charged for days despite a war going on?
The language is laughable. I found myself snorting, scoffing, and shaking my head. For example, her hand shakes as she coins the drinks machine. The tree is greening. The trolly bells up the road. She sleeved her coat, went outside and visored her eyes. ...passed a man forking his sandwich.
She is extremely contentious with everyone despite that it could get her and her family imprisoned or killed!
Perhaps worst of all is the breathlessly melodramatic tone throughout the book. more eye rolling. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

This book is wonderful, entertaining, deep, thoughtful, amusing, and compelling. Both my sisters recommended it & I'm grateful they did. the Lincoln Highway is a marvelous read.

The reader is perfect for this exquisitely written story. And what a story it is! The language is so beautiful that you will find yourself pausing to absorb phrases and descriptions that stun! Were people better writers a few decades ago? I consider this a miraculous book! My entire book group agrees.
