Should be mandatory reading for all managers.
Revisado: 06-18-21
I'd like to see this as a mandatory textbook for managers, bureaucrats, politicians, analysts, forecasters, judges, etc. Brilliantly done, well explained, and thoroughly enjoyable. I really appreciated that it was more thorough than a lot of pop psychology books and didn't shy away from the math. I felt it really addressed well the real world trade-offs, constraints, and disincentives, including psychological elements, of overriding our gut feelings and being more rigorous about decision making. I also appreciated the inclusion of practical implementation guidance.

Historia
A liberal society stands on the proposition that we should all take seriously the idea that we might be wrong. This means we must place no one, including ourselves, beyond the reach of criticism; it means that we must allow people to err, even where the error offends and upsets, as it often will." So writes Jonathan Rauch in Kindly Inquisitors, which has challenged listeners for more than 20 years with its bracing and provocative exploration of the issues surrounding attempts to limit free speech.

Reasoned and principled approach to epistemology
Revisado: 08-09-20
My new favorite book! Great defense of liberal ideals and the process of determining facts and truth. I recommend this without reservation.
Penn's narration is pretty good, but changes in volume and pitch for random sections is at times distracting but isn't too much to get in the way of listening.

Historia
Psychologist and physician Leonard Sax’s work with young people reveals that girls today have an incredibly brittle sense of self. Though they may look confident on the outside, teens and tweens are fragile inside, obsessed with grades, sports, networking sites, and appearances. They are confused about their sexual identity, as environmental toxins are accelerating physical maturity faster than their emotional maturity.

Historia
Most parenting books focus on changing a child's behaviour, but the truth is that children only change when their relationship with their parents changes. In Calm Parents, Happy Kids, Dr Laura Markham introduces an approach to parenting that eliminates threats, power struggles and manipulation, in favour of setting limits with empathy and communication.

Some good takeaways but as far left as it gets
Revisado: 02-26-19
I like the emphasis on connection, empathy and level responses, but I wonder if this reaches too far over to permissive and lacking boundaries. the author repeatedly refers to "the research" but rarely says which research or discusses the limits of application or alternate viewpoints. To sum up the book, if you take time to connect and empathize and diffuse opposition or negativity with a few minutes of roughhousing and play, then your kids will cooperate and learn to deal with emotions.

McManus's newest collection ponders the strange allure of the RV, the existential implications of being lost, the baffling tendency of animals to outsmart those who wish to hunt them, and the singular pleasure of doubling the size of every fish one doesn't actually catch.
