Great Story
Revisado: 01-02-24
I love the story. There are quite a few names going on and I can see how this book would be better read as opposed to listened to. Having said that, it's a great listen if you are focused on the story. It's not a good book to play in the background or it's easy to get lost because it's not told in a linear timeline

Very detailed

The only thing I would change would be the performance. It's fine but I've never listened to an audible book read by it's author that I didn't wish they had taken the last step and hired a professional reader.

Historia
On the surface, the Victorian age is one of propriety, industry, prudishness and piety. But scratch the surface and you’ll find scandal, sadism, sex, madness, malice and murder. Presented by Stephen Fry, this series delves deep into a period of time we think we know, to discover an altogether darker reality. The stories we’re told offer a different perspective on an era which underwent massive social change. As education, trade, technology and culture blossomed, why was there an undercurrent of the ‘forbidden’ festering beneath Victorian society?

Entertaining but *ughhh* the background music
Revisado: 12-03-18
This is an informative and entertaining production however the never ending background music is a huge distraction from a really decent narration. Some music at the opening of a book is fine but not the entire six hours.

Historia
There was no pattern to the murders, no common thread other than the fact that the victims were all vacationers, robbed of their possessions, and slain in seemingly random crimes. Authorities across three continents and a dozen nations had no idea they were all looking for the same man: Charles Sobhraj, aka "The Serpent". A handsome Frenchman of Vietnamese and Indian origin, Sobhraj targeted backpackers on the "hippie trail" between Europe and South Asia. A master of deception, he used his powerful intellect and considerable sex appeal to lure naive travelers into a life of crime.

Good Story / Weak Narration

I listen to quite a few audible books. I'm normally not all that fussy with narrators but this book needed one with significantly more voice acting skills.

Historia
On July 14th, 1966, Richard Franklin Speck swept through a quiet Chicago townhouse like a summer tornado and stabbed, strangled, and killed eight young nurses in a violent sexual rampage. By morning, only one nurse, Corazon Amurao, had miraculously survived, and her scream of terror was heard around the world. As the eight bodies were carried out of the small building, the coroner, who had seen the carnage up close, told a gathering crowd: "It is the crime of the century!"

Trial strategy explained
Revisado: 06-15-18
It took me awhile to purchase this book because it is such a well publicized case they I wasn't sure if it was worth listening to. I was wrong! While it certainly covers the elements of the story about the crime and criminal, it went into great depth about both the prosecution and defense strategies during the trial. If you like that kind of detail you will enjoy this book.

Historia
Jimmy Joste was a powerhouse in the oil and gas industry, but he was a weakling when it came to his gorgeous, athletic, longtime lover, Rhonda Glover. Addicted to her sexual prowess and madly in love, Joste gave her homes, cars, cash, and a $350,000 engagement ring. Their 15 years of passion and excess ended the day Rhonda drove directly from a shooting range to the Austin home they once shared. After pumping 10 bullets into him from a Glock 9mm, she stood over Joste's blood-splattered body and shot him six more times, twice below the waist.

Justice in America for mentally ill
Revisado: 06-09-18
If you like your true crime books to dive deep into the American justice system than this one is for you. While the author has a very apparent opinion on the subject of the treatment of mentally ill within our system he does present alternative points of view. Half story-half exposition this book does outline the difficulty between punishment and rehabilitation.

Historia
The wayward son of a revered Civil War general, Roland Molineux enjoyed good looks, status, and fortune - hardly the qualities of a prime suspect in a series of shocking, merciless cyanide killings. Molineux's subsequent indictment for murder led to two explosive trials and a sex-infused scandal that shocked the nation. Bringing to life Manhattan's Gilded Age, Schechter captures all the colors of the tumultuous legal proceedings.

Great detail

I love stories that go extensively into the detail that occurred prior to the actual event that generated the story. The writing is excellent and the story quite enjoyable.
