Historia
Sex, Time, and Power offers a tantalizing answer to an age-old question: Why did big-brained Homo sapiens suddenly emerge some 150,000 years ago? The key, according to Shlain, is female sexuality. Drawing on an awesome breadth of research, he shows how, long ago, the narrowness of the newly bipedal human female's pelvis and the increasing size of infants' heads precipitated a crisis for the species. Natural selection allowed for reconfiguration of hormonal cycles, entraining women with the periodicity of the moon - and imbuing women with the concept of time.

A man explains women
Revisado: 06-20-23
As a woman, I thought this book was going to be interesting at the least and empowering at best. It’s neither. It’s just a man expounding on his own theories about why women [insert phenomenon]. Just as has been happening in academia and medical science for a very long time. We’re right here, guys, you can just ask us questions. Please stop guessing, it’s getting embarrassing for you.
The narrator did fine. This time it was the material that was vapid and not worth the listen.

Enthralling and imaginative
Revisado: 02-15-23
When I picked up this book I thought it would be an decent fantasy novel, but I didn’t realize just how enjoyable it would be. Very early on, I was completely absorbed in the characters and fascinated by the story.
The magic and the wonder is masterfully wound through the world (our world). And the puzzle pieces come together in a very satisfying way.
It was such a great read, when I got to the end I was sad I couldn’t spend more time just with the characters in their world. That’s the mark of a truly great story to me: when I feel like the characters and I became friends over the course of the tale and I will miss them now that the story is finished.

Historia
Janelle Monáe and an incredible array of talented collaborating creators have written a collection of tales comprising the bold vision and powerful themes that have made Monáe such a compelling and celebrated storyteller. Dirty Computer introduced a world in which thoughts—as a means of self-conception—could be controlled or erased by a select few. And whether human, A.I., or other, your life and sentience was dictated by those who’d convinced themselves they had the right to decide your fate.

A look at how to make the future brighter by being our dirty selves
Revisado: 01-29-23
What an engaging journey through the lives of people in a future that could be a reality for humanity, but I hope is not. I always appreciate a view into little pockets of The Resistance, and I especially enjoy getting to know the people whose very existence is an act of rebellion.
The stories are interesting and the characters are relatable. The future is scary and unknowable, but this book leaves me with hope the human spirit can overcome the shackles we try to place upon it.

In this brilliant book, Isabel Wilkerson gives us a masterful portrait of an unseen phenomenon in America as she explores, through an immersive, deeply researched narrative and stories about real people, how America today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, a rigid hierarchy of human rankings. Beautifully written, original, and revealing, Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents is an eye-opening story of people and history, and a reexamination of what lies under the surface of ordinary lives and of American life today.

A fascinating and informative deep dive into the societal structure of the US
Revisado: 09-02-21
I had not previously considered our American class and race divides as a caste system. I appreciate Isabel Wilkerson’s explanations of her research and the anecdotes she shared from her own life.
This book is a lovely mix of stories of individual experience and group/community/society actions and behaviors.
I learned a lot about the history of racism in America and how the American caste system was created. I feel like I have a greater context for understanding the world I live in today from this book.
Reading this book was a very impactful experience, I highly recommend this book.

Historia
Survival Math is both a personal reckoning and a vital addition to the national conversation about race. Mitchell explores the Portland of his childhood, tracing the ways in which his family managed their lives in and around drugs, prostitution, gangs, and imprisonment as members of a tiny black population in one of the country’s whitest cities. He discusses sex work and serial killers, gangs and guns, near-death experiences, composite fathers, the concept of “hustle,” and the destructive power of drugs and addiction on family.

A window into another part of my hometown
Revisado: 04-11-21
Mitchell Jackson had a wonderful way with words. His mashup of academian vernacular and words from the streets is artful and endlessly enjoyable.
I grew up in the same place and there were parts of my life I saw in Jackson’s. There were also parts of Jackson’s story that was so different from my own it was like we lived in two separate towns. Which, in a way, we did thanks to an accumulation of institutionalized racism.
A beautiful telling of a complete story. Jackson shares the all the parts, pretty and shameful, gentle and violent, sincerely. The thing I appreciate most about the telling of this story is the appreciation of process. We are all somewhere on our journey and will never be finished.

Wow. What a powerful message told in a truly compelling way. I went on an emotional journey as the story unfolded. You can just read this book (or listen), or you can use it as a mirror to ask yourself some deep questions and uncover a little more if your own humanity.

Historia
Mama Black Widow tells the tragic story of Otis Tilson, a stunning black drag queen trapped in a cruel queer ghetto underworld. In hopes of escaping the racial bigotry andeconomic injustice of the South, Otis' family journeys north from their plantation to an urban promised land. Once in Chicago, Otis and his siblings become prisoners to a wasteland of violence, crime, prostitution, and rape. This is the gut-wrenching tale of the destruction of a family and the truest portrayal of homosexuality in the ghetto ever told.

The story is interesting and held my attention the whole time. But what really makes this story worth listening to is the narrator. She. Is. FABULOUS!! Gets the temperament of all the characters perfectly which makes it easy to follow dialogue between them. And!! And!! The voices for the characters are consistent throughout. So great! So. Great.

Revisado: 10-31-18
This is much more than an audio book... it’s a radio drama! Which is so much fun!
The actors are all wonderful and do an excellent job portraying the characters. The sound effects are also great. They draw you in and create a complete and immersive experience.
I have enjoyed listening to this Dracula performance every Halloween season since I first discovered it!
