OK, so, I listened to all nine books so it couldn’t have been that bad but, honestly, starting with the fourth book in this nine-book series it was like, “Again?” By the time I got to book seven I’m fairly certain I literally thought, ‘she’s not seriously going to add another mate’ (I’m talking about the author), but she did. It was ridiculous, honestly. It likely would have been much better had she not started out the series with so many during the first three books. I felt like it would have been a little better if there were more one-on-one scenes or tensions and conflicts and I’m not just talking about the romance scenes. At the end I was trying to speed listen through it. My mind would wander but it was quite clear what was going to happen so I didn’t feel like I missed anything. The scenes between Talia and all of her mates felt forced, and, silly. I’m just the kind of person who had a very hard time stopping a series once I start one.

Regarding the performance, Both narrators didn’t try to differentiate the male characters sufficiently. I found myself rewinding back to the beginning of each chapter many times to hear the POV character’s name stated to help put the scene into context. I kinda wish they had put more thought into each character’s personality and the inflection of their voice. It almost made me wish I had read it rather than listen to this audiobook.

I changed the play speed to 1.1 to 1.2 Xs so it felt normal. It was long enough as-is. LOL But well performed. Was a bit predictable too.

There’s nothing more I can say about this series and its beautifully written conclusion that hasn’t already been said. So, I’ll just nudge the 4.8 overall rating closer to the 5 that it deserves. Loved it.

Someone else very aptly titled their review something like the Princess Bride meets Dr. Who and I whole heartedly agree.

It’s a seemingly sweet and adventure filled story with endearing characters who start out seemingly simple and grow beautifully as the story progresses. There’s lots of heart and humor throughout and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Chris Davenport was also very well suited as the story’s sarcastic, wry narrator. I recall first hearing his voice as the villain in a different story. It stood out to me because it was a role so well performed it oozed evil. And had I read this book rather than listen to an audio version I’m fairly certain I never would have imagined him as the narrator but he was truly superb. I LOVED his narration. And, will now seek out more stories narrated by him.

Good, but Penny is too young & naive

I really enjoyed the previous 3 dramatic audios in the DDVN series so was hopeful I’d enjoy this one too. And while it was OK, Penny and her romance with Emery didn’t sit well with me. Either Penny was written with the personality and behaviors of a perky 12-yr old or she was played that way by the voice actor. I think she’s supposed to be in her early 20’s, maybe 24, while Emery is maybe 28 and has a war-weary persona. I’m glad the romantic scenes didn’t go all in. Hopefully she’ll undergo a serious character arc with lots of growth over the course of this series and will come out less naive and childlike in the end.

Overall, this series still remains well cast and performed. The voices actors and sound effects bring it to life.

I only recently started listening to dramatized audios so I’ve only listened to a few series but this has one of the best performances so far. I didn’t even think I’d like anything with vampires but the first book was so well performed I was hooked. It’s so much like listening to a movie and I liken this series to “The Fall Guy” with all the action, some mystery, and definitely humor. Great light fun without the weight that other novels have.

With this third book I’m still greatly entertained and I’m so happy there was a good dose of Darius in this one. I love Gabriel Michael’s voice. I hope he remains a prominent character in later books.

Every character feels so perfectly casted. Reagan, voiced by Alyssa Keegan, is perfectly snarky and irreverent, tough, but thoughtful at all the right places. Darius, voiced by Gabriel Michael, oozes with haughtiness, age, and disdain. Loved him first in Fourth Wing and had to find more audios he did. I now might have another voice actor I follow through Alyssa K, given she likely voices female characters I can get behind.

I don’t lean towards vampire stories at all - my library is filled with Sci-Fi - but this is funny, well written, well developed (just enough that it doesn’t hinder the story’s action) and VERY well acted. Given how well its acted I suspect I’m enjoying this dramatic audio better than had I read it myself.

I’m not even done with this book but already can’t wait to get the next audio.

Update: listening for the second time and have to say I love Callie and Dizzy! Their back and forth is so funny, and Dizzy’s lines especially always make me laugh. This is a great series and would highly recommend.

It was a good story, well written, and engaging. Somewhat bittersweet as the world faces its doom yet narrowly escapes it. It’s somewhat thought provoking, exciting, and not too heavy.

But what stood out most was the performance. While some of the foreign accents could have been better as the story progressed the overall performance just fell into a groove. At one point I actually thought to myself how effortless it felt. All the characters felt defined, their own voices consistent and clear, and it just flowed. I really enjoy this narrator / voice actor.

Decent story. I’m not a big reader / listener so don’t want to critique the writing too much but it did feel inconsistent yet it still kept my interest. I’m looking forward to the next book and was disappointed when it ended. Reminded me of Ready Player One since the main character is essentially inside a video game with his own levels and experience points. This is only the second story I’ve listened to / read like this so don’t know how common the video game setting is.

The performance was really dramatic and the number of different characters and accents was incredible. Very impressed by the range. At times you couldn’t tell it’s the same voice actor. My one gripe is his rendition of female characters. While it’s narrated by both Gabriel Michael and Melody Muze she only narrated maybe two short parts focused on a specific character. Gabriel Michael did the rest, and very well overall. I just didn’t care for his portrayal of the females. At times they sounded catty when it was clear from the dialogue they weren’t. It grew on me, tho. And despite that, I’m still interested in getting book 2!

So, yes, loved loved loved Nesta’s character arch especially considering that there’s so much potential for future storylines. This was definitely my favorite of the entire series, both the written story and the performances in this dramatic graphic audio. I honestly had a hard time getting through the first few audios. But, this one is excellent.

But keep your ear on Gwyn’s character and performance, especially in that scene near the end (you’ll know). Just WOW. It was heartfelt, a true tear jerker. And, maybe the voice actors had a chance to work off one another (?) for this book because it was performed amazingly well by all, especially those last few scenes. I hope to hear more from Gwyn in upcoming books because of how well she was performed.
