Historia
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time.

Something different
Revisado: 06-21-23
I read other reviews that said implausible but with insightful reference to complex politics in the world today, I found it the opposite. The characters had a lot more depth than many and I could readily identify with the main characters reflections. Enjoyable!

Historia
From the day that old Nana Reja found a baby abandoned under a bridge, the life of a small Mexican town forever changed. Disfigured and covered in a blanket of bees, little Simonopio is for some locals the stuff of superstition, a child kissed by the devil. But he is welcomed by landowners Francisco and Beatriz Morales, who adopt him and care for him. As he grows up, Simonopio becomes a cause for wonder to the Morales family, because when the uncannily gifted child closes his eyes, he can see what no one else can - visions of all that’s yet to come, both beautiful and dangerous.

Exceptional
Revisado: 10-16-19
I loved this book. It is superbly narrated by two sensitive people, who really reflect the mood and intentions of the book. I could not have asked for better. I found this book extremely moving, and well written. So many nuances of human emotions described throughout the plot. I empathised so many times. Cried when it finished and I am not a crier. Definitely will "read" again.

The storyline could have been intriguing by itself but the language and performance of the narrator - simply awful - white middle class, at its worst.

Why Mummy Drinks is the brilliant novel from Gill Sims, the author of the online sensation Peter and Jane. It is Mummy's 39th birthday. She is staring down the barrel of a future of people asking if she wants to come to their advanced yoga classes and polite book clubs where everyone claims to be tiddly after a glass of Pinot Grigio and says things like 'oooh gosh, are you having another glass?'

Awful narration and whinge-fest.
Revisado: 08-16-19
The storyline is there but told through the eyes of a whinging wife and mother which is supposed to be funny. At first it was amusing and then I thought maybe i was getting sick of the whinging because the narrator’s voice did not match with the age and socio- economic status of the main character. But it droned on and on about all the dreadful things that Ellen should have had full control over, I realised that no one likes to listen to a whiner whining on and not taking control for chapter after chapter. With just 3 hours left of the book I gave up and flicked to the last chapter and read other reviews. It seems you either love or hate this book. I hated it.

Good storytelling but again ruined by the narration of Julia’s chapters. Stilted, not flowing and awful all round except for Italian pronunciation. The other characters are well represented with flowing, considered narration.

Ugh terrible narration!
Revisado: 04-03-18
The story quite interesting but the narration of Guilia was so abysmal that it nearly made me turn the book off more than once. The other two narrators were pretty good but Guilia was portrayed in a stilted and artificial diction. Emphasis was all wrong, pauses in the wrong places and and diction far too slow for any enjoyment of her part. Sorry, whoever she was but this book deserves to be re- recorded.
