Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

Amazing tale, well told
Revisado: 12-30-18
This is one of the best business books ever and just a great book period. It peels back the Silicon Valley hype machine and exposes fraud at a staggering scale. It also is a great inside look at how investigative journalism really works and how PR henchman and thug lawyers from who are ostensibly professional people from elite schools will lie and threaten and drive honest, heroic people into bankruptcy, all in service of their highly unethical clients. I should also note it’s a page turner and fascinating portrait of someone who may well be a sociopath. I listened to this book with my wife on two long drives, from SF to LA and back, and the time just flew by.

Historia
What does it mean to devote yourself wholly to helping others? In Strangers Drowning, Larissa MacFarquhar seeks out people living lives of extreme ethical commitment and tells their deeply intimate stories; their stubborn integrity and their compromises; their bravery and their recklessness; their joys and defeats, and wrenching dilemmas. A couple adopts two children in distress. But then they think: If they can change two lives, why not four? Or 10? They adopt 20.

An amazing look and not just extraordinary people but the nature of humanity and our mind. I can't recommend it enough.

Historia
The first in-depth look at Lance Armstrong's doping scandal, the phenomenal business success built on the back of fraud, and the greatest conspiracy in the history of sports. Lance Armstrong won a record-smashing seven Tours de France after staring down cancer, and in the process became an international symbol of resilience and courage. In a sport constantly dogged by blood-doping scandals, he seemed above the fray. Then, in January 2013, the legend imploded. He admitted doping during the Tours and, in an interview with Oprah, described his "mythic, perfect story" as "one big lie."

Not about the bike
Revisado: 04-07-16
I don't care about cycling but I loved this deeply reported and well written book. The scale of the conspiracy and the way the story takes down not just Lance but sports and American culture makes this book about more than just bikes and athletes. A great story and a great piece of investigative journalism.
