Historia
Whip-smart librarian Peggy Sparks is determined to make sure that her brother Joe returns from the frontline to their London home, which they share with their beloved mother and grandmother. So when she is offered a once-in-a-lifetime job at the heart of the war effort, Peggy jumps at the prospect of making a real contribution to her country. But when she finds herself working under the fanciful socialite Lady Marigold Cecily, Peggy discovers that those around her are more keen on dancing at the Café de Paris than on ending the war.

Relationships of women during wartime
Revisado: 01-13-25
Just finished Audible’s top notch narration of A Girls Guide to Winning the War a 2024 HF by Annie Lyon’s and really appreciated the tale of the men and women who worked and wrote for England’s Ministry of Information during WW2. Book lovers will enjoy this story.
The novel includes the well documented horrors of the blitz, blackouts, rations, family loss and separation but adds new perspectives such as the status consequences alien Jews who had to flee Germany faced abroad , the role of paper rationing to book publishing and the battle to incorporate the women’s work at home into the nations war effort.
The highlight of the book for me was the way the author told the beautiful story of the strength/bonds of the women - great grandmother, grandmother, mother, daughter, children, sisters, friends colleagues, neighbors and even leaders such as Eleanor Roosevelt provided. And the support they gave to each other on the home front as well as in the novel opportunities that opened such as working for the government and supporting the needs of the home.

Good book overall, but too sappy to be a historical novel

A Happy Ending
Revisado: 02-27-21
Loss, tears, fright, love, torture, misery and joy. A good book that was both hard to endure and pleasing. The end made the sadness bearable

Narration is not her talent
Revisado: 02-23-21
SWW may be a hard worker and talented event planner but her narrative voice is shrill and uneven. I sympathize with her story but find her devotion to Melania sad. The worst part of the book was the narration. She mispronounces words Pee-Otis(POTUS) and inserts an I or me in every sentence. The book could easily be reduced to a magazine story. The author made unfortunate and repeatedly poor decisions in her personal and professional life and proceeded to reveal the details in excruciating detail.
