And the Casting Couch Burns
Revisado: 10-11-18
By now the publishers have probably learned their lesson; cast the wrong narrator to a beloved series and voices of protest will rise. But Quinn is only part of the quandary, the other being the story/writing itself, lacking the poetic essence The Vampire Chronicles is known to have. So much so that it raises suspension. If someone told me this came from the other Rice, as in son taking over the family business in what was intended to be a stealthy transition, I wouldn't be all that surprised.

Born a generation apart and with very different ideas about love and family, Mariam and Laila are two women brought jarringly together by war, by loss, and by fate. As they endure the ever escalating dangers around them, in their home as well as in the streets of Kabul, they come to form a bond that makes them both sisters and mother-daughter to each other, and that will ultimately alter the course not just of their own lives but of the next generation.

Why Can't All Books Be Like This?
Revisado: 08-23-18
Such a wonderful story! A true masterpiece that leaves you grateful for having discovered such substance. Especially in a world now so saturated in fluff. This has to be one of the greatest books ever written, with Kate Burton doing a wonderful job with narrating.

Clive Barker has made his mark on modern fiction by exposing all that is surreal and magical in the ordinary world - and exploring the profound and overwhelming terror that results. With its volatile mix of the fantastical and the contemporary, the everyday and the otherworldly, Weaveworld is an epic work of dark fantasy and horror - a tour de force from one of today's most forceful and imaginative artists.

Its Magic Lies Within the Weaving of the Words
Revisado: 06-23-18
The story was interesting and different, but what makes this book one of the greatest I have ever read is due to Barker's use of words. I never thought I'd be more impressed with how one uses words than Nabokov's Lolita, but then I come upon this treasure!

Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

“Bookstores attract the right kind of folk.”
Revisado: 05-26-18
Indeed they do, which is why I would recommend this literary treasure to any book lover. Of course there’ll be a small percentage of readers out there who won’t get it, won’t connect with it, won’t have the soul to appreciate such a story. There has never been a book written that has never encountered this. But for most story enthusiasts, I believe this tale will hit a soft spot. One of my favorite quotes from the book: “Master the short story and you will have mastered the world.” Does this mean if you’ve mastered flash fiction you’ve mastered the universe? (LOL) There’s been talk of this book being made into a film. In a time when superhero fluff rules the box office, one can only hope… The Storied Life of A.J. Fikrey. What a lovely piece of literature.

Has The Silver Lining Of Substance
Revisado: 05-22-18
I've never really been a fan of dystopian stories. Not that I'm afraid of thinking about the probable dark and gloomy future we are all heading towards. No, it's just HOW these stories are told. It takes talent to make such a subject interesting, and a lot of talent to make it emotionally connecting as well. Ishiguro is able to achieve this through his characters. It's not a genre I like to visit frequently, but as I always say, substance is the key component to good storytelling.

A Hyperlink to Geek Street
Revisado: 05-05-18
Spending most of our time in virtual worlds is definitely our future, it's obvious. As far as how much this book will serve as a foreshadowing to what lies ahead, only time will tell. For those of us who lived through the 80's the references are pretty interesting, but a lot of this book involves Geek mentality, which can be quite overwhelming if you're not into such circles and all its boasting of geek knowledge. The silver lining is, yes, one can become great at something if they are willing to put forth the obsessive effort it takes to get there. Haven't seen the film yet, but have a strong feeling it's going to make a much better ride in that visual medium than it does on the printed page.

In the midst of what should be an effulgent time of life, with its days bright with music, family, and rowing on the Seine, Jules is confronted headlong and all at once by a series of challenges to his principles, livelihood, and home, forcing him to grapple with his complex past and find a way forward. He risks fraud to save his terminally ill infant grandson, matches wits with a renegade insurance investigator, is drawn into an act of savage violence, and falls deeply, excitingly in love with a young cellist who is a third his age.

A Walk Through The Tenses Of Monsieur Jules
Revisado: 04-25-18
Overall, beautifully written. The main character is an interesting one, and it's nice to read about a person of this age, full of life experience, full of knowledge. The story could have been better served with a more simple structure, and the subplot of murder seemed quite out of place with the rest of the narrative. There was simply no need for it. Yes, Jules was once a soldier, as well as his people having faced harsh discrimination, but the couple of killings were still out of place and unnecessary. His plan to help his family is okay, but I feel it would have been much better if such a plan veered toward a different ending for him, instead of coming by way of running, to expire by making love with Elodi would have been great. I usually only take a quick glance at reviews of books before purchasing them, (there effect not being a determining factor) as I did with this one, among doing this coming upon someone who said attraction between someone as old as Jules was and someone as young as Elodi, such was unbelievable. For me, this only shows closemindedness. If two souls connect and want the same thing, fifty years difference should not stand in the way. And what a beautifully interesting concept this is. Actually, should have been explored more, with Elodi having a bigger part in the book, and of course, with their relationship actually coming to fruition. Overall though, nice piece of literature.
