Historia
From "the master of alternate history" comes a new trilogy that reimagines a mid-20th century in which General MacArthur, without bothering to consult President Truman, detonates nuclear warheads in several Manchurian cities after China enters the Korean War. In his acclaimed novels of alternate history, Harry Turtledove has scrutinized the twisted soul of the 20th century, from the forces that set World War I in motion to the rise of fascism in the decades that followed.

Completely unrealistic, not an alternate history
Revisado: 06-30-19
If you know little or nothing about the true events underlying this period of history, then you might find this mildly entertaining. The premise is that history was drastically changed by Harry Truman's decision to go along with General Douglas MacArthur's recommendation to use atomic bombs against the Chinese communists when they entered the conflict as active combatants. History tells us that Truman rejected the use of Atomic bombs. The author of this book wants us to believe that Truman decided to go along with General MacArthur's advice and that one decision set the stage for the nuclear horror that follows on the subsequent pages.
In reality, that decision would not have had the far reaching effects portrayed in this book. Why? Because at the time that Truman was faced with that decision, the Soviet Union had a grand total of FIVE atomic bombs (the Chinese Communists had zero, the same as the rest of the communist states at the time). The author completely ignores this fact and had Stalin dropping Atomic bombs like he got them at a K-Mart blue light special! The Soviets did a great job at making NATO believe that they had more bombs than they actually did and that probably did a lot to keep the Cold War from going hot. It didn't take the Soviets long to increase their stockpile (less than a decade easily), but at the time of the events here, Stalin couldn't retaliate with more than a few Atomic bombs. He never would have blown his limited wad like that. Instead, he would have portrayed the U.S. as warmongers and the Soviets as a tolerant, peace loving government. If you're going to write an alternate history, at least be honest about such a major change (along with an explanation of how the Soviets magically amassed such an impressive stockpile in the blip of time that passed between their first successful test and the events of this story).

Author tries too hard to sensationalize the plot
Revisado: 05-22-19
Instead of sticking to the main story, the book UNNECESSARILY kills off an essential character who is a huge fan favorite and throws in a clumsy JFK conspiracy that is complete trash!!!!! As he gets more successful, the author is increasingly infecting his stories with his liberal left of center political views. I really hope he stops that dead in its tracks before he gets like Stephen King (who I will no longer purchase or read.

Born weak and deformed, the last of their kind had one hope for survival: to return to their ancient city of Kelsingra. Accompanied by a disparate crew of untested young keepers, the dragons embarked on a harsh journey into the unknown along the toxic Rain Wild River.

Too much homosexuality
Revisado: 03-01-19
The level of open homosexuality is completely offensive and distracts from the story to the degree of making it a terrible book. This facet of the story is completely unnecessary to the story as a whole. It seems like it was included glorify this unnatural practice or to ingratiate the author with those who choose to engage in such acts. There should be a warning label on such books.Yuck!

Rushed to finish this series so he could move on
Revisado: 07-31-18
It seems like author was rushing this book because he was anxious to move on to his new series. Story was not very good, not very creative in wrapping up all the various plot lines. Very disappointed in how this series was treated in the series wrap up. I'm not sure if I will even bother with the new series by the author.

Historia
It's 2005, and Jed Walker has just joined the CIA. As a 10-year veteran of Air Force Special Operations, Walker is used to being at the pointy end of things. But normally the front line is much further from home. Sent to New Orleans on the trail of Russians wanting to claim back what was stolen from them in Afghanistan, it doesn't take long for Walker to realise that in the murky world of espionage, the rules of war do not apply.

Lazy writing, guy who hates conservative Americans
Revisado: 07-20-18
Author just keeps rehashing the same tired theme of corrupt Americans who are responsible for all the modern world's problems. And despite writing about American characters based in America, he and his editors are too lazy to use American terms (our cars have trunks, not "boots"). And to top it off, in this weak story he uses the name of an actual SDI missile defense system but then goes on to ignorantly describe it as a kinetic energy ground target weapon fired from space (Vaughn Hepner had such a system in his near-future attack on America series and he got it right because he did actual RESEARCH). Returning this tripe to Audible for a refund.

US characters & story but keeps using Aussie terms
Revisado: 07-16-18
US has parking lots, not carparks, car trunks, not boots, imperial measurements, not metric, mashed potatoes, not mashers, etc. Really annoying that the author is unable/unwilling to make an effort to adapt his terminology to the nationality of the main character and where key events are occurring. Also, this recording kept repeating the same chapters exactly several times for some reason. Otherwise, stories are ok if you can swallow the massive conspiracy theories involving high level US officials over and over and over and over. I am starting to think that the author has a real personal grudge against America.

Story is awful, repetitive and annoying
Revisado: 07-06-18
I'm used to the below par creativity in the various series by the authors (especially the son). They lean heavily on actual historical facts and figures and fill out the books with an almost canned formula they use over and over. I usually find the books mildly entertaining, but they have been declining in quality and the current series (of which this title is the latest installment) is AWFUL!! The author can't seem to come up with even the usual meager amount of original "story" and so fills in the huge gaps by essentially repeating prior books' events over and over to every new character by way of "bringing them up to speed." The main character is supposed to be a clandestine intelligence agent but seems to spill even the most classified secrets within 30 seconds of meeting someone because he has a gut feeling that he can trust them. Others characters either hate him with the strongest or passions or worship him with uncomfortable zeal and worship. And just about every time the main character opens his mouth, the author feels the need to describe him as "opening his automatic mouth" or some variation thereof. It makes me want to scream because it has become so painfully annoying. I loved The Brotherhood and The Corps series. The series that have followed have been increasingly less entertaining and are now trash unworthy of a community college creative writing semester project.
