One of Arnaldur’s best
Revisado: 11-23-24
I really enjoy the Icelandic noir. Arnaldur is a great story teller and of course, George Guidall is one of the best presenters in the business.

Historia
Stella is enjoying life as an almost student, or at least she is until a man falls from the sky right in front of her, leaving a big old hole in the pavement for Manchester Council to fill. The obvious question of how he ended up in the sky in the first place has no obvious answers, which is where The Stranger Times come in. This isn't just the hunt for another story though. Dark powers think Stella might have been involved and the only way she and the team can prove her innocence is to find out what the hell is really going on.

The screaming idiot almost ruined it
Revisado: 11-08-24
The random announcements that pop up every so often, are not humorous anymore. Just kind of annoying. Not sure if it’s because they are louder or if it’s a UK thing.
Maybe there’s just so far you can go with the Stranger Times theme.
Still some really choice moments.

Historia
It is a few years after Reykjavik Nights closed. Erlendur is now a detective working for the shadowy Marion Briem and is already divorced. It is 1979. A body of a man has been found in the blue lagoon, which has not yet become the tourist spot it is today. Apparently the victim fell from a great height, and at first the police investigate the possibility that he has been thrown out of an airplane.

Not Arnoldur’s best effort.

I don’t think the author knows much about the US military. Maybe they are different in overseas locations.

Historia
Over just the last few decades, laws in this nation have exploded in number; they are increasingly complex; and the punishments they carry are increasingly severe. Some of these laws come from our elected representatives, but many now come from agency officials largely insulated from democratic accountability. In Over Ruled, Neil Gorsuch and Janie Nitze explore these developments and the human toll so much law can carry for ordinary Americans.

Government out of control
Revisado: 09-11-24
I know the federal government is intruding on our lives. We are losing choice on more things everyday. Light bulbs, shower heads, washing machines, cars, refrigerators, dishwashers, gas cans… the list is endless.
However, the stories in this are so scary that one has to wonder, how close are we to total tyranny brought on by “experts”. Covid demonstrated how fear and trusting experts can rob us of everything.
The Constitution with all its warts is still better than any alternative. It deserves our protection.

Historia
In 1714, England's Parliament offered a huge reward to anyone whose method of measuring longitude could be proven successful. The scientific establishment--from Galileo to Sir Isaac Newton--had mapped the heavens in its certainty of a celestial answer. In stark contrast, one man, John Harrison, dared to imagine a mechanical solution--a clock that would keep precise time at sea, something no clock had been able to do on land. And the race was on....

A great piece of history. Navigation is so simple today that most people don’t remember how they got to their destination.

Revisado: 01-16-23
This book starts okay but but gets so monotonous with each 10 against one encounter. Each scene gets less exciting or interesting.
I hope Audible will take it back.

This book confirms the peril of bureaucracies
Revisado: 01-24-22
There is a lot of information in this book that documents how bureaucracies can undo a democracy.
I have done some fact checking of my own and can verify some of the information presented in this book. There’s too much information for me to verify all that is presented here but I have not found any inconsistencies.
The only reason I didn’t give it a higher rating is that it gets very repetitive. This is due to each chapter being a sub book and much of the background information is repeated.
Also, the later chapters get quite preachy and partisan. The author leaves no doubt that he’s a Democrat. We all know that this is not a Republican only problem.

I was 21 voting for the 1st time not for Joe
Revisado: 12-09-21
It was abundantly clear that Joe is everything that is wrong with DC, even as far back as 1072. A career parasite that never had a real job. Selling his influence to the highest bidder. It’s no wonder the his family is such a train wreck.
This book lays it out as clearly as a “real” journalist would. It’s hard to find one these days but Miranda does the job. The facts are laid out.
