Independent thinker
Revisado: 11-25-24
After following Savage off and on for years, reconnecting with him is refreshing for me because of his independent thinking. Though being an unapologetic conservative, he refuses to toe the party line and gives fresh insights on new ways of looking at our political landscape.

As Ferguson, Missouri, erupted in August 2014 and media commentators across the ideological spectrum referred to the angry response of African Americans as 'Black rage', historian Carol Anderson wrote a remarkable op-ed in the Washington Post showing that this was, instead, 'white rage at work. With so much attention on the flames,' she wrote, 'everyone had ignored the kindling.'

Disappointing
Revisado: 01-27-22
I read this book to learn and gain insight into a point of view different than my own; namely, the worldview that sees America as fundamentally and institutionally racist. Perhaps this just wasnt the right book to read to find what I was looking for. If you are looking to evaluate the veracity of the "fundamentally racist America" narrative, keep looking. This book, true to it's name, only cherry-picks examples of racist people from the past doing terrible things. In my opinion, it falls short of putting forth any cogent argument.
Due to the seemingly wide acceptance of this worldview, I had almost hoped (for the sake of it's adherents), that such an argument could be made, for example pointing to existing laws or prevailing ideologies on which our country is based that supported their argument. Unfortunately, all the author did was provide a brief history of racist acts and statements from individuals, mostly. Of course, they also covered racist laws, such as the Jim Crowe law codes.
One redeeming quality was that she did tell many stories and facts from history that I hadnt been aware of. Some nasty stuff, for sure. Definitely educational on how inhumanely humans can treat each other in service to bad ideas.
The most disappointing thing was the hypocrisy of the author. She often accused her ideological opponents of deceit and twisting the facts, but unfortunately she employed this same tactic constantly. The were multiple stories that I could tell right off the top of my head without any research that she twisted to fit her narrative. Mostly she just cherry-picked the facts that supported her viewpoint, and conveniently failed to mention those that didnt. We all do that to some degree, of course; but if the author is a true expert writing a book about a subject, surely she's aware of enough good solid evidence to support her argument that she didnt have to lean on that.

Historia
Two decades after the publication of The Black Book of Communism, nearly everyone is or at least should be aware of the immense evil produced by that devilish ideology first hatched when Karl Marx penned his Communist Manifesto two centuries ago. Far too many people, however, separate Marx the man from the evils wrought by the oppressive ideology and theory that bears his name.

Renowned neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, blows the lid off a topic that's been buried in medical literature for far too long: carbs are destroying your brain. And not just unhealthy carbs, but even healthy ones like whole grains can cause dementia, ADHD, anxiety, chronic headaches, depression, and much more.

Enlightening. Scary.
Revisado: 07-04-15
This book, along with Wheat Belly, reveals seriously scary information regarding wheat and high glycemic foods, chief among them being processed carbs, destructive effects on our brains. We know that the studies exist is sufficient quantities, yet the US government is STILL recommending these destructive (and deadly) dietary guidelines. "We didnt know" is not longer a valid excuse. Ben Carson is dead on when he calls Special Interests the "fourth branch of government."
Are these not crimes against humanity?
Shouldn't someone be held responsible?

The ancient world has cast a long shadow, influencing our customs and religious beliefs, our laws, and the form of our governments. It has taught us when and how we make war or pursue peace. It has shaped the buildings we live and work in and the art we hang on our walls. It has given us the calendar that organizes our year and has left its mark on the games we play.

Professor Aldrete really delivers on this staggering amount of information! His perspective on how geography shapes cultures was thought provoking, and it was fascinating to get a birds eye view of the historical record and a real sense of context.
I didnt expect him to go so in-depth on the religion, philosophy and comparisons, but I got a more complete feel of the cultures that way. Long, but great listen!

Historia
What will it take to run a marathon in less than two hours? The world's fastest times for the marathon have been dropping since the distance of 26.2 miles was made official nearly one hundred years ago. But after a noticeable decline that occurred for a half century, the times, while still edging lower, have stalled several minutes north of two hours for the past decade. For the first time, 1:59 examines what it will take for an elite distance runner to go subtwo hours.

Western Society is in confusion, the industrial world is teetering on collapse, and it looks like things could get worse. Agrarian blogger, historian, and "plain" preacher Michael Bunker has been living off of the grid for many years, and he has some advice for those living in the industrial/consumerist economy... living an off off-grid life is achievable. It has been done for thousands of years, and it can be done today...

These 24 lectures introduce what is considered the most important collection of post-New Testament writings. Although largely unknown and unread, these writings provide a treasure trove of insights into Christianity, and they are crucial to understanding the development of a religion that was shaped largely outside the pages of the New Testament itself.

Very interesting topic, professor lacked
Revisado: 02-21-15
In comparison to other Great Courses I have listened to, I think that the Teaching Company could have found someone to do a better job. Not that Prof. Ehrman did a poor job - far from it! But performance was not outstanding, which I understood to be the main objective of the "great" courses.
He is extremely knowledgeable and does a great job of communicating many of the interesting relationships and points of significance in the documents.
However, he came across as very proud; quite puffed up, like so many academics, about himself and his interpretation of the ancient writing, which is so far superior to that of any to come before him. This, to me, took away from the content. Pity.
I may just have an allergy to inflated academics...so take what I say with a grain of salt.
Overall, good job!

Historia
In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish. Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner.
