Historia
Frédéric Chopin is the pianist-composer par excellence. Regarded as one of the most mesmerizing performers of his day, he lives on in his music – his waltzes, mazurkas, études, preludes, nocturnes, three piano sonatas, two piano concertos, and much more. Here, his life, from his birth in Poland, his famous affair with the French writer George Sand, to his death at the age of 39 in Paris, is told with his music featuring prominently. We think of Chopin as a "frail, sheltered genius" but this forthright portrait demonstrates he was far more boisterous than that.

Made for audiobook
Revisado: 02-25-25
I fit in the category of, occasionally enjoy classical music but cant tell most musicians apart besides pieces I know, and generally dont know anything about the composers. Audiobook was the perfect medium for this, interspersed music with stories about Chopin's life and firsthand accounts of those around him. It demystified Chopin for me and let me appreciate his music in a new way.

Historia
A slender novel of epic power and the winner of the Booker Prize 2024, Orbital deftly snapshots one day in the lives of six women and men traveling through space. Selected for one of the last space station missions of its kind before the program is dismantled, these astronauts and cosmonauts—from America, Russia, Italy, Britain, and Japan—have left their lives behind to travel at a speed of over seventeen thousand miles an hour as the earth reels below.

Many passages to really think about, terrible audiobook
Revisado: 01-15-25
I'm not sure how the narrator chose this profession.. she has an off-again, mostly on-again lisp, but what makes for more difficult listening is that she completely aspirated or doesn't even pronounce the final "s" sounds of most words. at least for plural words you can usually tell it by context, but for other parts I had no clue what word(s) she had just said. I felt like this would've made for an enjoyable listening otherwise..

Writing brilliantly and profoundly about class, sex, love, loss, work, despair, and war, Saunders cuts to the core of the contemporary experience. These stories take on the big questions and explore the fault lines of our own morality, delving into the questions of what makes us good and what makes us human.

Awesome
Revisado: 05-13-24
Loved this. Escape from Spiderhead, wow. Semplica Girl Diaries, really all the stories gave me a lot to think about it and were also so different from each other that I had a feeling of excitement waiting to hear what was next. And I loved the narration by George Saunders. Super nice to listen to, and he's also acting out the characters or narration in the way that he wrote them. Almost feels more like poetry and helps me understand how this is a performance in a way.

Amazing, especially as an audiobook
Revisado: 06-28-23
I've been doing audible everyday for 6 months, and this is the first audiobook I finished without wanting to speed up the narration. I was worried at first that the author speaks a bit quietly and pauses his sentences in unexpected places, but I completely forget about this after 30 minutes or so, and when considering that the story is his, you really get immersed. The author's descriptions are so vivid, and the various people in the story so interesting and moving. There are probably some people who want some kind of moral or political commentary on the migration, but leaving it out really lets you focus on the perspective of this boy in a strange place. I hope that he was reunited with the other characters in the story.
