A little scary but necessary!
Revisado: 01-27-25
Americans are in really bad health generally. The “four horseman” are real. There is so much a single individual can do to increase their chances of staying active and healthy late into life….and most people know what to do, but they don’t! Denial is just part of the normal, older American’s response to obesity, bad diet, inactivity…..it is hard to understand. Health insurance pays millions to keep unhealthy people alive and yet those who work hard at staying healthy get no breaks.

Great story terrible narrator.
Revisado: 01-27-25
One of the tricky things about audio books is that a bad narrator can really ruin a good story.
I’m afraid this the case here. Very hard to follow because the narrator had no rhythm or subtlety, or connection to the words.
Great story though!!

Problems!
Revisado: 01-27-25
This story just isn’t plausible and it could have been. There are lots of nice parts but I kept thinking “you had so many avenues to escape the bad guy, to kill him or seek help…but they put up with it for years and years! And there was a huge rush to conclusion at the end which left me feeling short changed. Hope her next novel is better thought out.

Historia
In the wake of the 1929 stock market crash, Lanny Budd’s financial acumen and his marriage into great wealth enable him to continue the lifestyle he has always enjoyed. But the devastation the collapse has wrought on ordinary citizens has only strengthened Lanny’s socialist ideals. In Germany to visit relatives, Lanny encounters a disturbing atmosphere of hatred and jingoism. But Lanny’s gravest fear is the threat a national socialist government poses to the German Jewish family of Hansi, the musician husband of Lanny’s sister, Bess.

Revisado: 12-09-23
This is a great story and really brings to life the dreadful German decline into hell before, during and after WW2. Agonizing and maddening and much to close to current events playing out in our world today. No one believed that such horrors could and did occur, until they couldn't not believe it any more. It can happen again.

Historia
This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen.

I came to Stephen King late. I always thought he was just a horror writer. But he is master story teller and seems to be able to do it again and again. This was a hard read in places, a little too close to home (current state of the world), but that's one of the things King does best. I listen in the car so I like these epic stories. He has the ability to really transport you to his world.

Oh boy!! Not so good.
Revisado: 12-09-23
It takes a really good writer to make the unbelievable...believable. Stephen King does this really well. The best thing I can say about this story is that I listened until the end (I fast forwarded a lot of it). It is predictable, the stolen baby thing has been done a million times and it moves from one close, violent encounter to another with so many holes in it that I found myself scolding the author! A newborn baby would never have survived this chase and all the people who lost their lives along the way, in the name of the "baby", is regrettable! I think the phrase "Find my baby" must have been used about a million times (baby pronounced Bay-bay) along with "pigs" in a growly voice and "pulled stitches". Kind of gives me a headache thinking about it.

Bringing her dozen years of community organizing and training to bear, Gordon shares the rhetorical approaches she and other organizers employ to not only counter these pernicious myths, but to dismantle the anti-fat bias that so often underpin them.

Conflicted.
Revisado: 07-20-23
Everyone deserves to be treated with respect and dignity. Our world can be cruel and it is getting crueler due to social media and the abhorrent behavior or our leaders (one in particular). But there IS a problem. The American population is getting heavier and heavier. It Does affect health.
I am a “thin person”. I make choices about what I eat.
The author doesn’t address the food problem. The availability of sugar and highly processed foods that cause a cycle of craving as blood sugar surges and drops.
Take a drive through rural parts of the Deep South. It’s hard to find healthy food. Obesity is normal. A two hundred pound woman is considered thin beside her two hundred and fifty pound friend.
There is a problem. It is complicated, it can be tragic and I just can’t accept that a three hundred and forty pound woman is just fine, I hear it in her voice. She’s not fine.
Anti-fatness? Fatness-concern for the American population? Fat for fat?
Well written, quite repetitive. I left feeling a bit frustrated and annoyed.
Conflicted.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

Historia
It is a perfect July morning, and Elle, a 50-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at “The Paper Palace” - the family summer place she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different: Last night, Elle and her oldest friend, Jonas, crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love.

Thoroughly unlikeable characters.
Revisado: 01-24-22
I think that this book would have been much better without the dramatic, and somewhat childish, exaggerated narration. I have felt the same about Nan McNamara's narration of other titles. Annoying.
But this story is a bit upsetting because it is so predictable and normal for these times, unhappy people seeking solutions to their own misery by having sex with other people to feel better, and then realizing they are still miserable. Never ends well. Entitlement, constant dissatisfaction, dismissiveness, disrespect for others.....its all there. Maybe the author is successful because she made me dislike them all so much? Not sure. I know I will not remember this book six months from now.
