Historia
When Jack and Elizabeth meet as college students in the gritty '90s Chicago art scene, the two quickly join forces and hold on tight, each eager to claim a place in the thriving underground scene with an appreciative kindred spirit. Fast-forward twenty years to suburban married life, and alongside the challenges of parenting, they encounter the often-baffling pursuits of health and happiness from polyamorous would-be suitors to home-renovation hysteria.

A high quality reading
Revisado: 07-24-24
While I thought the narrative of this book was good although slightly too complicated by half, the narrator was absolutely phenomenal. Absolutely made it worth the price of admission. An interesting examination of marriage and what makes it work or fail.

Historia
With her arrival on the music scene in the early 1980s, Madonna generated nothing short of an explosion—taking the nation by storm with her liberated politics and breathtaking talent. But Madonna was more than just a pop star. Everywhere, fans gravitated to her as an emblem of a new age, one in which feminism could shed the buttoned-down demeanor of the 1970s and feel relevant to a new generation. Deftly tracing Madonna’s story from her roots to her rise to super-stardom, master biographer Mary Gabriel captures the dramatic life and achievements of one of the greatest artists of our time.

Book Good, Narrator Not So Much
Revisado: 01-10-24
This is a thoroughly researched account of Madonna and her art. While there are some insights into her as a person, the greater focus of the book is on the art. I think that the author did a great job on this front. The grand problem I had with this book was with the narrator. She was slow and kept butchering names. When I bumped it up to 1.5, she went by at a normal speed and it was much more tolerable. Still, it was not a good reading on her part. This book deserved more, I think.

This series is phenomenal
Revisado: 08-18-23
The man has done a massive service to those who have suffered under the thumb of the zealous leaders of the USSR. While one can complain about the historical rigor, that is not the purpose of this work. Its point is to tell the tale of those who lived this experience. The narrator on this book is amazing. If there is a tragedy aside from the system itself, it's the recording quality. It's so bad. Put that aside and listen to this whole project.

Historia
Tsukiko, 38, works in an office and lives alone. One night, she happens to meet one of her former high school teachers, "Sensei", in a local bar. Tsukiko had only ever called him "Sensei" ("Teacher"). He is 30 years her senior, retired, and presumably a widower. Their relationship develops from a perfunctory acknowledgment of each other as they eat and drink alone at the bar, to a hesitant intimacy, which tilts awkwardly and poignantly into love.

A Little Too Cool for Me

I thought that this was OK. I found the voice to be a little too distant for my taste. It didn't help that I didn't particularly care for either of the mains.

Historia
From one of America's most talented historians and winner of a LA Times Book Prize comes a brilliant new account of Richard Nixon that reveals the riveting backstory to the red state/blue state resentments that divide our nation today. Told with urgency and sharp political insight, Nixonland recaptures America's turbulent 1960s and early 1970s and reveals how Richard Nixon rose from the political grave to seize and hold the presidency.

Master of the Art
Revisado: 06-06-23
When we think of great tellers of history, there are some immediate people who come to mind: Branch, Caro, Kearns Goodwin. Perlstein should be in that conversation. A phenomenal history of one of our most important and pettiest presidents. A story that should be infuriating is told with elan and verve. Just a great book, read well by Mr. Thorpe.

Historia
Seldom does a book have the impact of Michelle Alexander’s The New Jim Crow. Since it was first published in 2010, it has been cited in judicial decisions and has been adopted in campus-wide and community-wide reads; it helped inspire the creation of the Marshall Project and the new $100 million Art for Justice Fund; it has been the winner of numerous prizes, including the prestigious NAACP Image Award; and it has spent nearly 250 weeks on the New York Times best seller list.

Essential Listen
Revisado: 04-27-23
This book should be required listening for everyone. Even though so much has changed on the civil rights front since the original version of this book, the argument here is still as relevant, unfortunately so. Given that this is a free listen at the time I'm writing this review, there's no excuse.

No Audible Guy, I Did Not Enjoy This
Revisado: 04-19-23
It has things going for it. Top level cast? Yes. Good sound design? Yes. However, it's missing the one thing that a comedy program should have: laughs. I generally find Ms. McKinnon to be very funny, but this fell really flat for me. Maybe I was spoiled by Space 1969, but the weirdly detached comedy verging on anti-comedy just did not work. This is coming from someone who loves that awkward, uncomfortable style. If she tries again, I'll probably listen if she's not writing it.

Historia
The story opens in 1906 in New Rochelle, New York, at the home of an affluent American family. One lazy Sunday afternoon, the famous escape artist Harry Houdini swerves his car into a telephone pole outside their house. And almost magically, the line between fantasy and historical fact, between real and imaginary characters, disappears.

Slightly Dated But Very Strong
Revisado: 03-23-23
This is a modern classic for a reason. Doctorow is able to weave numerous stories into one kaleidoscopic vision of these United States at a pivotal time in the country's history. While there were some descriptions of sexual content that lingered for longer than they need to, one has to remember that this is a book written by a white man in the 70s. It's about par for the course. As well, they don't fully take away from the strength of the narrative.
The weakest part of this whole enterprise is honestly Mr. Doctorow himself. For some reason, his narration reminded me of F. Murray Abraham's character from Galaxy Quest. It felt thrown off and uninspiring. This book deserved better than him reading it.

Historia
Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Revisado: 03-21-23
While I will give credit to Ms. Reading for her work on this book, this was not good. I found the end of this book to be wildly frustrating. As well, I was expecting this book to be sexy and scary, and honestly it was neither. I'll not be listening to another book from Ms. Rice.

Delightful
Revisado: 02-02-23
This was quite fun. Mr. Oakley wrote a phenomenal script, and the voice cast, with Ms. Lyonne in particular, really selling the whole enterprise. If you are familiar with the shows he has worked on, you should know what to expect here and it is delivered in spades. If you don't subscribe to plus, maybe do it so you can listen to things like this.
