Historia
When Bunny, a fluffy, black-and-white sheepadoodle, was eight weeks old, her guardian Alexis presented her with an odd gift: a button programed to say “outside” when pressed. Within a few weeks, Bunny was using it all the time and Alexis, encouraged by Bunny’s progress, continued to introduce more buttons and more words . . . Three years later, Bunny can now communicate using over one hundred buttons, stringing together important, relatable, philosophical phrases such as “Love you Mom,” “Dad went poop,” and “Ugh why?”

Great book and narration
Revisado: 11-17-23
It’s really fun to hear Alexis narrating her own book. This is a wonderful read that encompasses much of Alexis and Bunny’s journey through life together. The book is insightful, informative, and inspiring, and offers a lot of the fun and humor that Bunny and Alexis share on IG. It was lovely to get a deeper sense of their connection and relationship. Thanks for writing this book! Highly recommend.

Historia
Aged just seven, Suzanne Heywood set sail with her parents and brother on a three-year voyage around the world. What followed turned instead into a decade-long way of life, through storms, shipwrecks, reefs and isolation, with little formal schooling. No one else knew where they were most of the time and no state showed any interest in what was happening to the children. Suzanne fought her parents, longing to return to England and to education and stability. This memoir covers her astonishing upbringing.

Excellent book, great narration by the author
Revisado: 11-15-23
I first heard about Wavewalker in an article that popped into my newsfeed. The glimpse of this book provided in that article prompted me to preorder it. I’m so glad I did. This book is a well-written memoir/coming of age experience. Suzanne is an excellent writer and she offers broad strokes of her younger life bound together by details that shape the narrative beautifully. Her story is profoundly moving, thought provoking, and inspiring. I highly recommend Wavewalker.

Fabulous, well-written, delightful story
Revisado: 09-23-22
This book is great! The romance genre needs more of these two authors and others who write as well as they do.
The story is fun, relatable and has some interesting turns. The main characters generally think and act like adults. When they don't, they're able to have actual conversations and engage with their emotions as people who want to grow and change. They take responsibility for their actions, and there is actual character growth, which can be a rarity in romance stories. The HEA is sweet, lovely and satisfying.
Also-yay for a romance story with a main character who uses a wheelchair, and queer and gender fluid characters! This book treats disabled, queer, and gender fluid folks as humans who deserve love, acceptance and respect (which if you're not 100% on board with, then maybe this isn't the right book for you). It was really refreshing to have characters using preferred pronouns and discussing queer relationships casually. It was very show and don't tell, which made the book just really flow.
Overall, I highly recommend this book, and I can't wait for the next one they write.
*Spoiler alert for the below paragraph*
My one minor complaint is that there wasn't more investigation of the dad's relationship with his daughters, or him taking responsibility for his part in the damage he did to the relationship with the main character especially. Zelda really stepped up and took responsibility for her part in the fractured relationship, and I would have really liked to see the dad admitting that he could have handled things better too (been more communicative, spent time engaging with his daughters and easing them into the new reality, not taking the new wife on the trip he promised to his daughter, maybe even offered family therapy, etc). Even so, this was not enough of a disappointment to give the book less than 5 stars, and overall it was a wonderful read.

Historia
A towering genius who'd already solved the problem of death by making memory recording possible, Cassia leads a team of scientists and problem solvers to a station floating in the harsh winds of Saturn. Their mission: to grow interstellar ships using nanobots in the planet's material-rich environment. She called them "monsters" to help sell the project to a skeptical public. Little did she know how prophetic that name would become.

Excellent story, non-hetero protagonist!
Revisado: 06-12-21
Amazing that this is a free listen, well worth it! Wish is was longer, or part of a series, but it's also perfect as it is.
This was my first experience of Thomas Carpenter's writing, and I now want to read everything else he has written. If you like "hard" (ie, heavy on the science) sci-fi that includes good character development, emotional connection, and an *actual non-hetero protagonist* you will enjoy this story.
The world building is solid, the narration is really good, and the overall story is very satisfying. There were some familiar tropes, but with such a unique spin that it kept me engaged all the way to the end.
It was also great to have a hard sci-fi story that acknowledges the existence of LGBTQ folks as a norm rather than an anomaly. Not that the story is based on this fact; however, it's central to the main character's story arc. And it was awesome to have a strong female character who is not straight.
I suspect that folks who are giving this book lower reviews, or complaining about the fact that sexuality is named in this book, have issues with non-hetero sexuality (there are no true sex scenes, just implications of intimacy/sex, both straight and not).
In my opinion, we need more sci-fi like this! 5 stars all the way around. I hope Carpenter keeps writing more science fiction, it's really inspirational to have a stories like this one available.

Disappointing.
Revisado: 12-23-19
First, I appreciate that Audible offers free selections each month, providing an opportunity to listen to things I might not otherwise try. When I find something great, I make an effort to leave it a good review so more listeners will give it a chance and enjoy it. When I find something bad, I want to warn other listeners not to waste their time.
This short story is pretty bad, on so many levels, and I agree with the reviews that say "at least it was free." Without intending to, it highlights issues of class, race, and gender privilege, basically favoring of all of the above. The vapid main character is shallow and one-dimensional, and her character arc does not deliver. It's fairly easy to guess what happened, no twists that make things interesting...unsurprisingly, everyone chooses to lean into their own comfort.
In summary: selfish, privileged people struggle briefly. The end.

Historia
From the moment Dara of Westwood spied the Silver Headed Raptor nesting in Rundeval Peak, the precocious redheaded 12-year-old girl was enchanted. The youngest daughter of the Master of the Wood lived in ramshackle Westwood Hall, in the independently minded Westwood estate of Sevendor. Her determination to capture a baby falcon and train it wasn’t hampered by the fact that Dara had never climbed a mountain, had never been trained in falconry, or even remotely had permission from her father to do it.

Another great installment in the Spellmonger world
Revisado: 09-01-19
First, don’t listen to all the negative reviews. If you have read the other Spellmonger books, you will enjoy this one. The writing and story are just as good, and appropriate to the POV of Dara. While this book is aimed more at the YA crowd (as noted by the author, it is a spinoff “Cadet” series), it is a worthy addition to the universe Terry Mancour has created. If you are a reader looking for a new series, this book is also a nice entrance into the Spellmonger world, though there are spoilers for events in the main series.
Additionally, the choice of switching narrators for this series, was, in my opinion, a good one. While I the love the narration of John Lee, I think Finty Williams does a great job with Dara’s voice, and creates a different feel for this series that focuses on Dara. Williams’ pronunciation choices are different than Lee’s, and though I didn’t always like them, I didn’t feel it detracted from the story. Some folks have complained that Williams sounded too serious for a 12 year old girl, but Dara is not an ordinary girl, and I believe the voice matched the the character quite well.
This book was really fun way to spend more time in the Spellmonger’world, and is very worth the credit. I’m looking forward to the upcoming installments.

Great short story!
Revisado: 06-06-19
I picked this up because it was a monthly freebie, not expecting much. But to my surprise and delight it was really well written and the narration was good.
That Michael Livingston manages to paint such a rich world with truly interesting characters in the short span of this story is a testament to his skills.
If you're interested in adventure, action, matriarchal society that flips gender roles around, and like first person stories, this definitely is worth a go. The fact that it is free is only the icing on the cake.
My only complaint is that it isn't longer, and there aren't more books in this world!

Revisado: 11-21-18
I enjoyed everything about this book. Madeleine Miller did an amazing job of bringing new life to an old myth; her take on the gods, witches, mortals, and monsters of Ancient Greece is quite captivating. The writing is beautiful, Circe is a fascinating character to follow, and the arc of her story is well developed and satisfying.
The narration is fabulous, and I hope that Perdita Weeks gets a lot more work from Audible; her voice, inflections, and characterizations are excellent and deserve to be heard more.

Ugh...
Revisado: 11-20-18
If you are looking for a great story, excellent wordlbuilding, and interesting characters, look elsewhere. I gave this book a solid try, made it about 5 hours in before I had to just delete it. Honestly, I do not understand why or how Sterling got so many good reviews. It was my first book by this author, and I was excited to have found another potential author and series to get into...sadly, it did not impress.
The world building is minimal, lots of hinting at things and never quite fleshing them out; often something gets mentioned once and is not revisited, as if it was forgotten by the author. The main character acts more like a confused adolescent than a grown woman, and her development through the story is almost nonexistent. The supporting male characters are all rather one dimensional, and the relationship between them and the main character are not believable. The journey of the main character into the world of magi is stilted and inane, and everyone she meets seems to be functioning at a teenage level. For a group of immortals who have existed for millennia, there is a distinct lack of maturity, clarity and organization in these characters and their world.
There are so many missed opportunities to round out the plot, the world, and the characters, that as a listener this book was an intensely frustrating experience. The narration was ok, but voices and inflections were strangely whispery and did not quite fit the male characters. However, given the quality of the writing I think any narrator would have a difficult time with it. The main reason I made it as far in into the story as I did was that I was doing chores while listening.
I am somewhat new to this genre and have really enjoyed other authors like Ilona Andrews, Grace Draven, and Faith Hunter, and picked Sterling up based on the good reviews, which is how I have discovered many new authors. Unfortunately, this book was so terrible that I felt compelled to write my first review to save others the pain of a bad listen. Avoid.
